Making the State tournament is the goal on the mind of all athletes and teams at the start of the season but not all teams and athletes are able to capture that goal, but four Sabetha Bluejay girls tennis players did just that last week at Regionals earning a spot at the Class 3-2-1A State tourney.

The Bluejays are primed and ready to continue their strong performances this season at the State tournament.

Leading the way all season for the Bluejays has been the senior doubles tandem of Amy Wysong and Ellie Montgomery who are headed back to the State tournament for the third straight year. The doubles team went a perfect 4-0 at Regionals and have been on a hot streak since midway through season, amassing a 27-3 record on the year thus far. Amy and Ellie last year registered a sixth place finish at State and look to top that in their senior year and Sabetha Coach Alicia Deters now's that is on their mind.

"They've (Amy Wysong & Ellie Montgomery) actually picked up pieces of paper and worked everything out and they now on paper they can be as highest as third. So that's definitely in the back of their minds and you know they've worked out every scenario that they possibly can. But if they go out there and play, Amy and Ellie tennis style they should be ok," said Coach Deters.

In the singles competition the Bluejays are sending a pair of competitors to State as sophomore, Lexi Wenger and junior, Alexa Menold notched spots at the State tournament after each going 2-2 at Regionals and placing fourth and sixth at the Regionals. On the season Lexi has posted a 20-12 record, while Alexa has a record of 14-17 on the year.

"Both of them are just playing at the top of their game; they are continuing to hit harder and be more aggressive heading towards the net. Alexa is just a totally different player right now and Lexi is developing more and more consistency," said Sabetha Tennis Coach, Alicia Deters.

According to Coach Alicia Deters the team was excited about their performance at Regionals finishing second place as a team.

"They were just excited and to see Lexi and Alexa get so excited, because they hadn't experienced it before was just a really great experience," said Coach Deters.

The four Bluejays hit the court on Friday for the State competition in Pratt and are primed and ready to continue the team’s strong season with great performances at the State tournament.
