Hiawatha Girls and Riverside Boys Get First Big 7 Wins

The Hiawatha girls evened their record at 2-2 and won their opening Big 7 League game in high-scoring fashion on Tuesday night at the Roundhouse as the Lady Redhawks scored the game's first 8 points and never looked back.  Hiawatha led 28-8 after one quarter and was up 47-10 at halftime before taking a 72-17 lead into the final quarter.   They hit 9 treys on the night and was 19 of 31 from the foul-line to aid the fourth highest scoring total in school history.  Emily Gartner registered an impressive double-double in her fourth straight game with 22 points and 13 rebounds plus 4 blocked shots, while Courtney Brockoff added 14 points, Kelsey Maxwell chipped in 9, Jada Rosa posted 8 and Molly Kettler delivered 7.  The Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank On" was Hosanna Fortmeyer who scored 10 of her 18 in the first quarter to get Hiawatha off to a quick start.  Fortmeyer hit three shots behind the arc and was 9 of 12 at the charity stripe.  Riverside was playing without regular starters Erica Halter and Tori Hoffman and lost fellow starter Mackenzie Brewer to injury during the contest.  Sydeney Meers had 5 points for the Cyclones who drop to 0-5 on the season.  

The Hiawatha boys led 17-13 after one quarter and hit a trio of three-pointers in the opening frame.  Yet, the scoring vanished after that period and no more treys were made while the Redhawks also missed several opportunities to score in transition.  Riverside was consistent all night, taking a 26-24 lead at the intermission and extending the margin to 39-30 entering the fourth quarter.  The Cyclones hit 12 of 15 free throws to keep Hiawatha out of striking distance while Alex Davidson was the "Player to Bank On" with 18 points.  Andrae McGaughy added 12 as Riverside improved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.  Hiawatha got 14 points from Conner Bigham and 8 from Parker Hasenkamp before dropping to 0-4 this season.
