21 Kanzaland Area Athletes Earn KBCA All-State Basketball Honors

Basketball season is behind us with many area athletes playing their last basketball game of the year in All-Star matchups recently but the postseason honors continue to be handed out as the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has given out their All-State honors.

Twenty-one area athletes earned All-State honors from the KBCA in Class 1A to 4A after great season's this year on the basketball court.

Class 1A featured the highest amount of area athlete's garnering All-State honors, as 10 Twin Valley League players earned those honors. On the girls side both Laura Sudbeck of B&B and Brandi Jo Roepke of Valley Heights earned first team All-State honors after their teams won the 1A-DII State title and finished runner-up in 1A-DI, respectively. While Roepke's teammate Sidney Blackburn registered second team honors. Sudbeck a senior helped lead B&B to the 1A-DII State title as the team finished 24-3 on the season, while Valley Height was led by underclassmen in Roepke (soph) and Blackburn (junior) this season finishing second in 1A-DI with a 24-2 record.

On the boys side in 1A seven area athletes earned All-State honors all from the Twin Valley League. Valley Heights Mustang senior, Charles Musil led the way with first team honors after helping the Mustangs to the most wins in school history in a single season and third place in 1A-DII at State, finishing 23-3. Three seniors earned second team All-State honors from B&B, Centralia and Axtell, as Dustin Rottinghaus, Sam Steinlage and Payton Heinen earned the honors. Centralia Panther senior Brett Burdiek and Clifton-Clyde senior, Caleb Gelino each earned third team All-State, while Axtell senior, Christian Buessing was named honorable mention. Rottinghaus helped B&B to a third place performance at State in 1A-DII as the team finished 19-8 this season, while Steinlage & Burdiek lead Centralia to a 17-7 record this year. Clifton-Clyde made State in 1A-DI behind the play of Gelino and finished the year 9-14, while Axtell was led by Heinen, Buessing and their teammates this season going 14-10 missing out on a return trip to State by a buzzer-beater in Sub-State.

In Class 2A four area athletes earned All-State honors with one boy and three girls earning honors. Valley Falls Dragon senior, Luke Burns picked up second team honors after helping the Dragons to the State tournament and the NEKL title this year as the team finished 22-2. On the girls side for the second straight year the JCN Chargers finished runner-up at State finishing the year 25-1 and senior's, Jacee Kramer and Jamie Navinskey spear headed the Chargers success. Kramer earned first team All-State while Navinskey was named honorable mention. Washington County Tiger junior, Erin Alexander also earned All-State honors picking up second team honors after the Tigers went 22-3 and finished third at State. 

Class 3A for the area was highlighted by a pair of third place showings at State for the Nemaha Valley Raiders as both the boys and girls each capped their season's off with third place. For the boys team senior, Caleb Meyer earned second team All-State honors after a monster season and State tournament, as the Raiders finished 23-3 on the season. For the lady Raiders they capped off the season 21-5 and had junior, Jaci Swart earn honorable mention All-State. Sabetha Bluejay sophomore, Alexis McAfee earned second team All-State after the Bluejays were 16-6 on the season and won a share of the Big Seven League title. Marysville Bulldog senior, Abi Degendhardt also earned All-State honors in 3A being named honorable mention after the Bulldogs went 17-6 on the year.

In Class 4A three area athletes earned All-State honors all three from teams that made the State tournament. The Holton Wildcats had senior, Krystie Miller and junior, Garett Beecher both earn All-State; as Miller was named second team and Beecher honorable mention. The Holton girls took home a third place showing this season in 4A-DII finishing 17-8, while the boys made State and finished 17-6. Santa Fe Trail Charger senior, Shelby Dahl was the other area athlete to earn All-State, earning second team after the Chargers finished the year 22-3 and won the 4A-DII State title.

Overall it was another great year for the Kanzaland listening area with two State champs from area leagues, two runner-ups and four third place team finishes in basketball this season and many great individual performances all year.
