Six Sabetha Bluejays & Six Marysville Bulldogs Qualfiy for 3-2-1A Girl's Tennis State Competition

After inclement weather postponed the Regional girl's tennis tournament in Leavenworth a day the action got underway on Saturday and State bids were earned at the Class 3-2-1A level with the Sabetha Bluejays and Marysville Bulldogs from the area have six players earn spots at State.

The top six singles and top six doubles teams at each Regional earn a spot at the State competition on October 17th-18th in Dodge City.

For the Sabetha Bluejays it was Lexi Wenger and Courtney Plattner earning State bids as singles competitors and the tandems of Jordyn Wells and Alexa Menold and Nicole Brey and Jena Winkler. Wenger picked up a fourth place finish at Regionals, while Plattner finished fifth for the Bluejays. Wenger started the day with an opening round 6-0, 6-0 win over a Wabaunsee competitor, while Plattner beat a competitor from Maranatha 6-3, 6-2 to advance out of the first round in the second round/quarterfinals Wenger and Plattner were matched up against each other and it was Wenger claiming the victory 6-2, 6-1 over her teammate. In the Semifinals, Wenger fell to Rachel Friese of Marysville 1-6, 6-3. 6-1, sending her to the third place match where she lost 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 to a competitor from Maranatha to finish the day 2-2 and place fourth. Plattner after the loss to her teammate picked up a win in consolation bracket play over a competitor from Neodesha and then won 6-4, 6-3 in the fifth place match to place fifth and finish Regionals 3-1. Wenger takes a 21-9 record into State, while Plattner touts a 23-8 mark this year heading into State.

In doubles competition the teams of Jordyn Wells and Alexa Menold earned a spot at State by placing third on the day, while the team of Nicole Brey and Jena Winkler earned a fifth place finish. Wells and Menold won 6-0, 6-1 in their opening round matchup versus a team from Wabaunsee, while Brey and Winkler posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over a team from Maranatha. In the second round/quarterfinals both Sabetha Bluejay doubles teams faced off against each other and the tandem of Wells and Menold won 6-3, 1-6 (12-10). With the win Wells and Menold was in the Semifinals and took a loss to the Marysville group of Lauren Hawkinson and Madison Nieberding who won the Semifinal match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Falling in the Semifinals Jordyn and Alexa played in the third place match and ended Regionals with a win beating a team from Marysville in Casey Cohorst and Maddie Ellenbecker, 6-3, 6-7 [5-7], 6-4, claiming third and finish Regionals 3-1. After the loss in the second round the team of Brey and Winkler picked up the 6-1, 6-0 win over a team from Maranatha in the consolation bracket and then took fifth place by beating a team from KC Christian, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, to finish Regionals 3-1 and fifth. Heading into State the team Wells and Menold tout a record of 22-8 and Brey and Winkler have an 18-6 record.

For Marysville their best performance came in the doubles competition as the tandem of Hawkinson and Nieberding took home first place with a 3-0 day with a first round bye. After the opening round bye Hawkinson and Nieberding topped a team from Maranatha 6-0, 6-0 and then beat Wells and Menold of Sabetha in the Semifinals to make the Finals. In the finals Hawkinson and Nieberding posted the win 6-3, 6-0 beating a team from KC Christian. The Bulldogs tandem of Cohorst and Ellenbecker took fourth, going 1-2 with a bye on the day. After the opening round bye, Cohorst and Ellenbecker won 6-2, 6-4 in the second round against KC Christian but fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to a team from KC Christian in the Semifinals and then took a loss in the third place match falling to Sabetha. Lauren and Madison head into State with a 28-6 record, while Casey and Maddie tout a 19-11 mark.

In singles competition, Racehl Friese placed second and Megan Hill took sixth to both earn spots at State. Friese opened up Regionals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over a competitor from Wabaunsee, then won 6-1, 6-0 over a competitor from Neodesha in the second round. In the Semifinals, Friese beat Wenger of Sabetha but then ended Regionals with a loss in the Finals, falling 6-2, 6-4 to a competitor from KC Christian. For Hill, she opened up Regionals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hiawatha's Lydia Lierz, but fell in the second round to a competitor from KC Christian (6-3, 6-0). In the consolation bracket she won a match against another KC Christian competitor but took a loss in the fifth place match falling to Plattner of Sabetha, to finish sixth. Friese will head to State for Marysville with a 16-16 record, while Hill has an 11-19 record on the year.

Immaculata and Hiawatha had multiple competitors at Regionals but saw all their competitors bow out of competitor in the opening round at Regionals in singles and doubles play.

Both Sabetha and Marysville continue their tennis seasons with State qualifiers and will hit the courts one more time this year at the 3-2-1A State competition on October 17th-18th in Dodge City.
