It was a weekend that featured rainy weather, but unlike the football games on Friday night the weather didn't play a factor with volleyball tournament of course being played inside a gym. The action was dominated by two of the top teams in the DVL in Valley Falls and Riverside as they both made it to the championship game on the day and the Dragons would need three sets but would capture the Jackson Heights Invitational crown with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-19 win. The Dragons finished the day a perfect 5-0 on the day, while Riverside notched a 3-2 record, falling once in pool play before the championship.
Valley Falls took down Maur Hill-Mount Academy in the semifinals, while Riverside meet up with Immaculata in the semifinals. Riverside needed three sets to advance over Immaculata (23-25, 25-21, 25-22), rallying from a set down to advance to the finals; Valley Falls too care of Maur Hill-Mount Academy in straight sets (25-10, 25-18).
With their losses in the semifinals Immaculata and Maur Hill-Mount Academy faced each other in the third place game with the Raiders prevailing in straight sets 25-17, 25-22. Immaculata finished the tourney 3-2, while Maur Hill registered a 2-3 record on the day.
Horton Chargers took home fifth place, defeating Jackson Heights in straight sets (25-12, 25-21) in the fifth place game to cap off a 3-1 day for the Chargers. The Cobras took home sixth at their home tourney going 1-3 in action.
The final two teams McLouth and Troy meet up in the seventh place game, as both teams came out of pool play winless. It would be the Bulldogs of McLouth notching the win in this matchup but Troy made match of it as they pushed it to three sets (25-19, 17-25, 29-27). McLouth finished the day 1-3 and Troy 0-4 on the day.
