KBCA Releases Latest Rankings With 17 Area Teams Ranked -- Jan. 11th

The high school basketball action across Kansas is heating back up after the Holiday break and teams area getting in a few games before mid-season tournaments coming soon. The first KBCA rankings of 2015 have been released and 17 area teams find themselves in the rankings this week.

Class 4A-DII continues to house the Holton Wildcat boys and girls both in the rankings as they are both 4-3 on the season. The Holton girls are down two spots this week falling to seventh in the polls, after splitting their first two games out of the break, beating Jeff West (45-30) and falling to Nemaha Central (38-26) on the road. For the Holton boys they moved down two spots also this week falling to ninth in the polls, as they too split their first two games back out of the break beating Jeff West (74-44) and falling to Nemaha Central (63-56) on the road. The Atchison Redmen boys are the only other area 4A-DII team ranked in the latest polls and moved up two spots in the rankings to eighth as they are 4-2 on the year. The Redmen won both of their games last week topping ACCHS, 93-36 and beating KC Sumner on Friday, 75-70.

Four area teams are ranked in Class 3A, including a new area team in the rankings for the first time this year. The Sabetha Bluejays continue to highlight the 3A rankings for the area as both girls and boys teams are 7-0 on the season and remain ranked. The lady Bluejays are up one spot to fourth in the rankings after beating Riverside, 75-12 and Royal Valley, 52-41 coming out of the break. While the Sabetha boys are up two spots to fifth after beating Riverside, 60-31 and Royal Valley, 64-45 to start 2015. The Nemaha Central Thunder boys are still undefeated, also as they beat Royal Valley, 59-48 on the road and cameback at home to top Holton on Friday, 63-56 to move to 7-0 on the season. The Thunder have been ranked all season and moved up one spot this week to third in 3A, while Maur Hill-Mount Academy who is also 7-0 on the year jumped into the rankings at tenth for the first time this year. The Ravens picked up a 64-43 win over McLouth and 58-31 win over JCN coming out of the Holiday break.

Just like Class 3A, Class 2A houses four area teams in the rankings with two boys and two girls teams in the rankings, including two new area teams to the rankings. The Washington County Tigers out of the Twin Valley League have been in the rankings from start of the year and continue to have strong seasons, as the lady Tigers are 8-0 and ranked second, while the boys are 7-1 and ranked seventh in 2A. The lady Tigers have wins over Blue Valley (67-26) and Troy (66-18) out of the break, while the boys topped Blue Valley (67-19) and Troy (59-41), also. Two Northeast Kansas League teams in the Valley Falls girls and Jackson Heights boys join the club in the rankings in 2A this week for the first time this year. The Valley Falls girls improved to 6-1 on the season after a wins over Jackson Heights (51-34) and Immaculata and jumped into the rankings in a big way coming in at fifth this week. While the Jackson Heights boys are 5-1 on the season after wins over Valley Falls (56-39) and McLouth (59-42) and jump into the rankings at tenth this week.

Five TVL teams continue to highlight the 1A-DI rankings this week as the Hanover boys, Centralia boys and girls, and the Valley Heights boys and girls all remain ranked this week. For the Hanover boys they continue to cruise along improving to 8-0 on the year and continue to rank number one in the polls, after wins against Linn (82-28) and Valley Heights (62-41). The Centralia boys and girls remained steadfast in their rankings checking in at third and ninth, respectively again as they are 7-0 and 6-1 on the season. The Centralia boys out of the Holiday break picked wins over Doniphan West (53-40) and Blue Valley (77-26), while the girls also earned wins against both those teams (49-20 over Doniphan West and 70-26 over Blue Valley). For Valley Heights the lady Mustangs continue to rank second in the polls and sit at 7-0 on the year after wins over Onaga (74-37) and Hanover (46-39), while the boys are 4-3 on the year and fell to eighth in the rankings. The Mustang boys opened the 2015 portion of the season with a 61-47 win over Onaga, but took a 62-41 loss to Hanover.

In Class 1A-DII the lady Eagles of Axtell continue to remain the only area team in the rankings as they come in at ninth this week, up one spot with their 8-2 record. The Eagles since the Holiday break have picked up wins against Wetmore (57-34) and Frankfort (61-34).

Teams continue on with regular season action this week, as mid-season tournaments loom in the weeks to come with plenty of high school basketball action still to go in the season.
