Horton Girls and Jackson Heights Boys Win Friday

The Horton girls and Jackson Heights boys won on Friday night as play wrapped up for the first time through the Northeast Kansas League schedule. 

GIRLS = Horton 39, Jackson Heights 34
The game had some huge swings has Jackson Heights went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter and outscored the visiting Chargers 17-5 in the frame to take a 23-15 lead into halftime.  Yet, Horton came out and scored the first 9 points of the second half and had a 16-2 advantage in the third quarter until Marley Wareham made the only Cobra three-point-basket of the night to make it 31-28 Horton after three quarters. Horton held on for the win despite not making a free throw in the second half and only 4 of 13 for the game. They only committed 6 of their 18 turnovers after intermission. 

Chelsey Trautloff had 9 of her 12 points in the second half, including a trey and 7 points in the third quarter during Horton's big run to earn Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha "Player to Bank On" honors.  Kelly Lehew added 11 and Katlyn McAfee had 8 including two trifecta's as Horton improved to 4-4 on the season.  

Jackson Heights had 20 turnovers and made only 9 of 20 free throws while making only three field goals the entire second half.  Jordan Wells led the Cobras with 9 points before falling to 4-4 on the year.  

BOYS = Jackson Heights 62, Horton 38
After an early 7-7 tie, Jackson Heights picked up the defensive pressure and created several full court turnovers into transition baskets during a 12-0 run to go up 19-7.  The Cobras then scored the first 13 points of the second quarter and pulled out to a 41-18 halftime advantage.  

Zane Richter scored right on his season average of 25 points and did not play in the fourth quarter to earn "Player to Bank On" honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company in Hiawatha.  RIchter added 8 rebounds and 3 blocks plus a couple steals and assists.  Korby Strube added 11 points and created five steals while Lane Slocum chipped in 10 points as Jackson Heights improved to 7-1 on the season.  

Horton finished with 20 turnovers and the only player with more than 6 points was Alec Cowley with 17.  The Horton boys are now 3-5 on the season and both teams will compete in the Thunder Classic Boys Tournament in Seneca next week.
