Valley Falls Sweeps Horton

It was a double-header sweep as the Valley Falls Dragons continued winning streaks on Tuesday night by defeating Horton for the second time this season.  

GIRLS = Valley Falls 48, Horton 35

Valley Falls scored the first seven points of the game and led 16-5 after one quarter as Horton committed eight early turnovers.  Trailing by 12 at halftime, the Chargers made a push and got within 29-21 on consecutive baskets by Madison Blackburn midway through the third quarter.  But, Valley answered with a 10-0 run to put the game away and make 7 of 10 free throws in the final quarter to secure their 8th straight win.  Jenna Kramer and Rachel Frakes each posted 13 points while Ali Brown added 12 and Valley Falls secured their first league title since 1995 with a 15-0 mark in the NEKL and 17-2 overall.  Daspin Brunning had 15 points in the loss for Horton whoe dropped to 7-12 overall and 6-9 in the league.

Horton battled foul trouble at the forward spots in losing for the first time in four games.  The Chargers were down 24-23 at halftime but took a pair of 5 point leads in the third quarter, before Valley Falls continued their dominant inside attack and made 16 of 21 free throws, including 10 of 13 in the fourth quarter to capture the victory.  Grant Haag had 21 points and Zac Allen added 12 as the Dragons had a huge advantage in the paint and on the glass.  They are now 12-7 and played their way into the fourth seed and a home game to start 2A Sub-State while forcing Horton to go on the road at the five seed in their 3A Sub State.  Derrick Stone led the Chargers with 18 points while Channdler Knudson added 12. Horton made only 6 of 19 foul shots on the night and fell to 7-12 overall and 6-9 in the NEKL.   

Both teams wrap up the regular season on Friday at home as Valley Falls hosts McLouth and Horton plays against Jackson Heights with live coverage of the Cobras and Chargers on KNZA 103.9  FM and www.mscsports.net
