Jackson Heights Boys Claim Share of NEKL Title - While Horton Girls Earn Win

The high school basketball regular season wrapped up last Friday and Jackson Heights and Horton squared off to wrap up the regular season. The lady Chargers won the rubber match between the Cobras as it was the third time the girls meet up this season winning 54-36, while the Jackson Heights boys picked up the win and earned a share of the Northeast Kansas League title with their 67-58 win.

The night started off with Horton taking control after the initial bucket of the game by Jackson Heights it was Horton charging out to a lead and led 15-6 after the first quarter. That lead was cut to six by halftime as Horton led 20-14 but in the second half Horton pushed their lead out further posting an 18-9 third quarter and go on to earn the 54-36 win.

Junior, Chelsey Trautloff paced the Chargers with a season high 16 points, hitting a pair of three's and having five point first and third quarters to help Horton in the win. Freshman, Katlyn McAfee added 10 points, while six other lady Chargers scored to help Horton improve to 8-12 on the year and 7-9 in NEKL play. The loss puts Jackson Heights at 11-9 on the year and 9-7 in NEKL play, while Jessica Keehn led the Cobras on the night with 10 points.

Jackson Heights boy’s controlled the game the first time around this season but this time Horton would not go away quietly despite having four key varsity players out in the contest. Behind strong first quarter's from Seth Holliday and Channdler Knudson for Jackson Heights and Horton, respectively the game was tied at 14-14 after one period, as Holliday scored seven points in the first and Knudson hit three three's for nine points. The Cobras struck with a big second quarter as Zane Richter scored 11 in the frame and Jackson Heights outscored Horton 20-8 in the period to lead 34-22 at the half. The lead grew after the third quarter to 53-37 but Horton put together a 21-14 fourth and made things interesting but the Cobras fended them off for the 67-58 win.

Richter yet again led the Cobras this season posting 31 points, hitting five three-pointers in the win as Jackson Heights improved to 18-2 and 15-1 in NEKL earning them a share of the NEKL title with Maur Hill. Holliday and Lane Slocum joined Richter in double figures with 11 and 12 points, respectively. Horton with the loss fell to 7-13 and 6-10 in NEKL as Knudson paced the team with 21 points, while Derrick Stone chipped in 15 points.

Both teams now turn their attention to postseason Sub-State basketball early next week.
