Hiawatha Girls & Holton Boys Take Top Spots at ACCHS Track Invite

Eleven area teams and 12 overall hit the track on Tuesday in Effingham to compete at the ACCHS track Invitational and multiple top notch performances were earned and displayed by area athletes.

It was a tight race on both the girls and boys side of competition for the top spots in many individual competitions and in the team standings overall, also. Behind eight event victories and 107 total points the lady Red Hawks of Hiawatha earned the ACCHS Invite team title, edging out Jefferson County North by five points for the crown. The Chargers posted 102 points to take second, while Holton was a distant third place with 84 points. The rest of the girls team finishes had: ACCHS fourth, Maur Hill-Mount Academy fifth, Doniphan West sixth, Oskaloosa seventh, Horton, eighth, Valley Falls ninth, McLouth 10th, Riverside 11th and Veritas Christian 12th.

The boy’s race was even tighter for the top spot as the Holton Wildcats who won four events notched 83 total points to just surpass Hiawatha by one-point for first place, as the Red Hawks had 82 points giving them second place. With 70.5 points the Riverside Cyclones took third place as a team. The rest of the girls team finishes had: Maur Hill-Mount Academy fourth, JCN fifth, Horton sixth, Oskaloosa seventh, McLouth eighth, Doniphan West ninth, Valley Falls 10th, ACCHS 11th and Veritas Christian 12th.

On their way to first place as a team the Hiawatha lady Red Hawks captured eight event victories with Jordan Puvogel spear heading the performance sweeping the distance running races, winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Puvogel posted times of 2:24.36, 5:29.34 and 12:24.58, respectively to win all three events; Jordan won the 1600 by over 10 seconds and the 3200 by over 30 seconds. The Red Hawks also claimed the 4x800 meter relay title behind a time of 10:08, grabbing the win by 18 seconds, while Molly Kettler won the 400 meter dash, notching a time of 1:04.26. Emily Gartner continues to perform strong in the discus and shot put, winning both again with tosses of 147'00 and 39'07, winning the discus by nearly 47 feet and the shot put by nearly six feet. Cariann Kunkel leapt her way to gold in the high jump with a leap of 5'02. On the boys side of competition Hiawatha was led by Brendan Steele who picked up two more golds this track season by winning the long jump (20'07.25) and javelin (152'10), winning the javelin by over 10 feet. While, the Red Hawk boy’s 4x800 meter relay also claimed gold registering a time of 8:46, winning by 21 seconds.

The Holton Wildcats were the only other area team to have more than four first place individual event performances on the day as the Wildcats won eight events between the girls and boys action. Holly Karn and Will Wright each registered a multi-gold day winning a pair of events. Karn raced her way to wins in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 17.12 and 52.85, while Wright sprinted to wins in the 200 and 400 meter dashes registering times of 23.82 and 52.66. The Holton girls and boys 4x100 meter relay teams both also picked up first place finishes notching times of 52.36 and 45.55, respectively. While Kimmie Snepp won the girls 100 meter dash (13.02) and Indie Allen won the triple jump (42'11).

Both Doniphan West and Maur Hill each had four event wins on the day at the ACCHS track Invite. For Doniphan West it was Kenzie Blevins yet again setting the pace winning the girls 200 meter dash (27.39) and leaping to wins in the long jump (16'01.50) and triple jump (35'08.25). In the triple jump, Blevins broke her own school record by 15 inches. Allyssa Clark also grabbed gold for the Mustangs winning the girls javelin with a toss of 118'00.

Maur Hill was led by the performance of Jack Siebert who paced his way to wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs after posting times of 4:53.50 and 10:46.69, while the Ravens boys and girls 4x400 meter relay teams also took the gold with times of 3:40.87 and 4:23.89, respectively.

For the JCN Chargers three gold medals were brought home as Brayden Summers captured the first place in the boys 800 meter run (2:10.44), Ridge Robertson won the boys pole vault (9'00) and Lyndsey Vittitow won the girls pole vault (7'00).

Riverside Cyclones were led by Andrae McGaughy who swept the hurdles as he posted times of 16.20 and 41.73 to win the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Tre'nez Wilkinson sprinted his way to a win in the 100 meter dash for the Cyclones with a time of 11.78.

Trey Dishon added to his trophy case for as the Horton Charger tossed his way to the win in both the discus (139'04) and shot put (50'10), winning the shot put by over seven feet. The ACCHS Tigers had one first place performance on the day as Josh Weaver won the high jump with a leap of 6'00, while McLouth, Valley Falls and Oskaloosa all had competitors in action on the day, also.
