Several Area Track Athletes Compete Against Top Competition at KU Relays

The annual Kansas Relays took place in Lawrence, Kansas once again this year and in its 88th year, several Northeast Kansas area track athletes competed against some of the top fellow high school athletes in Kansas and a few other States’.

Eight different area schools were represented at the KU Relays this year and multiple top flight performances were earned including a pair of second place performances.

Hiawatha Red Hawk junior, Emily Gartner posted one of those second place showings as she registered a throw of 148'09 to claim second place in the girl’s discus, taking second in a field of 23 competitors. Also competing for the Red Hawks were the quartet of Jordan Puvogel, Molly Kettler, Kailey Davis and Courtney Brockhoff who competed in three relay events. The foursome took 18th out of 23 teams in the girls distance medley race with a time of 13:21.66, while also placing 19th out of 21 teams in the girls 4x1600 meter relay (23:40.84) and 28th out of 35 teams in the girls 3200 meter relay (10:19.78).

Elijah Smith of Valley Heights earned the other second place performance at the KU Relays for the area athletes competing as he posted a leap of 46'10.75 to claim the silver medal in a field of 34 competitors. Smith also registered a fifth place showing in the boys long jump behind a leap of 22'06.50; he competed in a field of 28 competitors in the long jump. Sidney Blackburn and Kayla Smith both also competed representing the Valley Heights Mustangs, as Blackburn placed 21st out of 24 in the girl’s javelin with a toss of 106'03, while behind a leap of 34'07 Smith took 16th out of 36 competitors in the girl’s triple jump.

The Nemaha Central Thunder was represented by Shaylyn Stallbaumer who earned sixth place out of 24 competitors in the girl’s javelin posting a toss of 129'11, while also taking 29th in the girls shot put competition (35 competitors) behind a throw of 33'08.75.

Three other Twin Valley League athletes earned Top 10 marks in their competitions as Chad Gross of Linn took fourth out of 22 competitors in the boys high jump (6'08), Dylan Hodgson of Washington County finished eighth out of 36 runners in the boys 1600 meter run (4:17.81) and Kourtni Hubert of Clifton-Clyde placed ninth out of 24 competitors in the girls javelin (122'09).

Horton Charger senior, Trey Dishon posted the 14th best throw in the boy’s shot put with a mark of 49'09.25, as he competed against 30 other competitors. While, Perry Lecompton was represented by a pair of athletes as Austin Kurtz registered a throw of 169'07 in the boys javelin to place 12th out of 22 competitors, while Abbi Folks took 23rd out of 36 competitors in the girl’s long jump with a leap of 33'11.50.

The Northeast Kansas area was well represented at the 88th annual KU Relays and now the area athletes turn their attention back to the rest of the track season competing alongside their teammates as they strive to make the State competition in May in Wichita.
