For the first time since 1987 the Wetmore Cardinals will take to a football field as their own team after participating in a co-op with fellow schools over the years.

On Monday night (July 13th) the Prairie Hills USD 113 school board passed the initiative to start an 8-Man football program at Wetmore high school, passing it by a 4-2 vote. The vote means the Wetmore Cardinals football program will once again take flight and will field a JV team to start in 2015, per KSHSAA rules and will become a varsity sport during the 2016-2017 school year.

The change for Wetmore stems from Centralia deciding to end their cooperative football agreement with Wetmore, which will officially end after this upcoming school year. The Cardinals are in the works of constructing a JV schedule for 2015 and have been in talks with many schools and are moving forward as a football program.

More details to come, including a story in the annual Pigskin Preview Magazine produced by KNZA, Inc.
