Several area volleyball squads were looking for a strong performance to build upon in the final portion of the season as they competed at the Atchison Invitational on Saturday. 

While it was a non-area team in Shawnee Mission West claiming the title, second and third place went to a pair of area teams as Perry Lecompton picked up second place and the host Atchison earned a third place on their home court. 

The day started off with pool play action and in the action played at the high school it was Shawnee Mission West winning the pool going 4-0 with wins over Atchison, Immaculata, Pleasant Ridge and Maur Hill-Mount Academy all in straight sets. Atchison notched second place in the pool by winning in straight sets over Immaculata and three sets over both Pleasant Ridge and Maur Hill. Maur Hill earned a pair of wins on the day going 2-2 in pool play, with a three set win over Immaculata and straight victory over Pleasant Ridge, while Immaculata earned a straight set win over Pleasant Ridge. 

In pool play at the middle school it was the Perry Lecompton Kaws coming out on top with a 4-0 mark in pool play after beating Oskaloosa, Maranatha, KC Christian and Horton all in straight sets. Maranatha notched second place in the pool as they earned straight sets wins over Oskaloosa and KC Christian but needed three sets to best Horton. Horton Chargers finished the day 2-2 in pool play with straight set wins over Oskaloosa and KC Christian, while Oskaloosa also fell to KC Christian on the day. 

The Semifinals pitted Atchison against Perry Lecompton and Shawnee Mission West versus Maranatha and both matches were decided in straight sets with Perry and Shawnee Mission claiming wins. 

In the third place contest Atchison bounced back to finish the tournament with a 4-2 record after beating Maranatha in straight sets for third place. 

The Championship went to Shawnee Mission West who continued to be dominant on the day winning in straight sets again to finish 6-0 on the day and give the Kaws of Perry Lecompton second place with a 5-1 record on the day.
