Troy Earns Sub-State Rematch After Taking Out Lyndon
By Jonny Kane

After a heartbreaking 36-28 loss to Olpe in the Sub-State round of the Class 2-1A playoffs last year, the Troy Trojans were hoping for another shot.

For Head Coach Derek Jasper and his squad, that hope has come to fruition after both teams advanced with quarterfinal wins.

The Trojans took down Lyndon on the road Friday night 58-21, while the Eagles knocked off Jackson Heights 26-6.

The contest did not start off the way the Trojans wanted as they trailed 7-0 after the end of the first quarter.

In the second, the Trojans needed a spark to get going.

Kortin Blevins delivered with a two-yard touchdown run and Conner McNorton ran in the two-point conversion try to give Troy an 8-7 lead with 5:13 left in the half.

From there, the Trojans would pick up two scores in 45 seconds to take firm control.

First, Cuttar Huss intercepted a pass and took it back 51 yards to make it 16-7, Troy.

On the next Tiger possession, the Trojans scooped up a fumbled pitch to set up another scoring chance.

McNorton delivered – this time a three-yard rush – and Troy led 22-7 with 4:35 left in the half.

The Tigers would get a late touchdown on a Dexton Swinehart one-yard rush, but Troy led at the half, 22-15.

Out of the break, Troy wasted no time in extending their lead.

Junior quarterback Reid Greaser connected with junior receiver Cuttar Huss from 16 yards out and Alex Martinez ran in the two-point conversion to push the lead to 30-15.

The two teams went scoreless the rest of the third quarter.

Greaser connected with Brody Winder on a 30-yard swing pass to begin the fourth to make it 38-15, Troy.

On the next Tiger possession Swinehart orchestrated a scoring drive capped off by a four-yard pass to Jaden Hielscher to pull within 17.

The Tiger defense could not get a stop when they needed it though as Troy scored three unanswered touchdowns to cap off the win.

Alex Martinez and Taylor Scherer each had a rushing touchdown late: Martinez a 48-yarder and Scherer nine-yard rush. Brody Winder returned a fumble 98 yards for the final score of the game as time expired.

Greaser finished the contest 9-of-12 for 127 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Huss caught seven passes for 92 yards and a score.

Troy (10-1) hosts Olpe next Friday in the Class 2-1A Sub-State Championship.
