19 Area Football Players Earn All-State Honors, While Several Others Named Honorable Mention

The football season have come and gone and multiple Northeast Kansas area teams had solid seasons this year with a few making runs deep into the playoffs in there, respective classes. With the season now behind us the All-State honors have been handed out by multiple publications.

Eighteen area athlete's hailing from the Big Seven, Twin Valley, Northeast Kansas Leagues and other area schools earned All-State honors, while many others earned honorable mention honors.

In Class 4A-Division I the Atchison Redmen put together an 8-1 record winning the KCAL and just missing out on the playoffs. Senior, Wykeen Gill was a key part of the Redmen's succes on the season and he earned All-State honors at defensive back from the Topeka Capital Journal. 

The Holton Wildcats finished 9-4 on the season and were Class 4A-Division II State runner-ups this year and had three players earn All-State honors. Seniors, Mason Barta and Justin Rieschick both earned All-State at linebacker and defensive back, respectively from both the Wichita Eagle and Capital Journal. Barta also picked up Top 33 honors by the Capital Journal named to the third 11 of the Top 33. While, junior Brandon Lehnherr picked up All-State honors for the Wildats at offensive line form the Capital Journal. Fellow Big Seven League school in the Jeff West Tigers finished 5-4 and make the 4A-DII playoffs this year and senior, Luke Herring earned All-State at the specialist/kicker spot by both publications. Another Big Seven school had a pair of All-State honorees as Royal Valley who finished the year 6-3 had senior, Jarrett Roy earn All-State by both the Wichita Eagle and Capital Journal at defensive line and senior, Derrick Barger picked up All-State honors at runningback from the Capital Journal. Perry Lecompton senior, Mitchell Bond also earned All-State honors from the Capital Journal at defensive back after helping the Kaws finish 4-5 this year. 

The Nemaha Central Thunder put together a season to remember in Class 3A this year as they finished 10-1 making the playoffs after winning their District and winning the Big Seven League. Seniors, Winston Meyer and Tristan Allen each got the nod for All-State honors this year for the Thunder. Meyer was named All-State at defensive line in the Capital Journal and offensive line in the Wichita Eagle, while Allen at the end spot as a receiver earned All-State from the Capital Journal. Washington County Tigers also posted a 10-1 record this year and won their District and claimed the Twin Valley League title this year and senior, Konnor Penning was a key part of the team’s success and he earned All-State at defensive back by the Capital Journal. Sabetha Bluejay senior, Brock Frey also got the nod for All-State with his honors coming at defensive back, he helped the Bluejays finished 7-5 this year and made the Sectional round of the 3A playoffs. 

Troy Trojans made the Class 2-1A State championship for the first time in school history and finished as State runner-up this year with a 10-2 record. A pair of Troy juniors were named All-State as Cuttar Huss and Wil Smith picked up the honors at end (receiver) and defensive line getting the All-State nod in both publications. Senior, Cooper Leach set some new State records this year for Doniphan West who finished 4-5 this season. Leach was named All-State at end (receiver) by the Capital Journal. Jackson Heights Cobra senior, Wyatt Roles also picked up All-State honors this year at defensive line from the Capital Journal after helping the Cobras finish 8-2 with a playoff berth after winning their District. 

It was a State record breaking year for Hanover Wildcat junior, Will Bruna who set 8-Man State records in passing yards and touchdowns for a single season and he earned All-State honors at quarterback in 8-Man Division I by both publications along with his favorite target junior, Trey Loshe getting the All-State nod at end (receiver) in both publications. Bruna also was named to the Top 33 from the Capital Journal placed on the third 11 of the Top 33. Hanover finished the season 12-1 and 8-Man DI State runner-up for the second straight year. 

Axtell Eagles finished the season 10-2 and made a return trip to the 8-Man Division II Sub-State round of the playoffs this year. The play of senior, Colton Buessing was a big part of the team’s success and he earned All-State honors at linebacker from both the Wichita Eagle and Capital Journal.
