GIRLS - MH-MA 51, Jackson Heights 46

The MH-MA Lady Ravens used a couple three point baskets by Carly Taylor to spark an 8-0 run in the first quarter and would never give up the lead in securing a road win to start the season 3-0.  The Lady Ravens led 19-13 after one quarter and had a brief 10-point lead in the second quarter before Jackson Heights closed the gap to 37-33 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cobras got within 42-41 with three minutes to go and had possession before a steal and layup by Heather Ronnebaum and a couple free throws late by Taylor to seal the win.  Taylor finished with 11 points while Hana Ronnebaum had 9, but the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha Player to Bank on was Avery Lewman who scored 19 points, including a big fourth quarter trey and also had a handful of rebounds, steals and assists.  Jackson Heights fell to 1-2 despite a strong inside game with Hannah Williams posting 16 points and Katelin Strube adding 15 before fouling out.  Becca Gibson added 9 points for the Cobras in a battle of two teams coming off their best seasons in ten years.

BOYS = Jackson Heights 61, MH-MA 42

The Ravens and Cobras split their games last year and shared the NEKL Title with 15-1 records. On their home court, Jackson Heights (2-0) jumped to an 18-8 lead after one quarter, only to see MH-MA go on a 9-0 run to start the second and then Canyon Miller of the Ravens hit a pair of treys and scored the final eight points of the first half to give Maur Hill/Mount Academy the 25-24 advantage at halftime.  Wyatt Olberding and Zane Richter were never contained however against the Raven 2-3 zone defense and the Cobras pulled out in front with a 22-8 third quarter before putting the game away.  Olberding scored 30 points, including six trifecta's and was perfect with six foul shots to earn Player to Bank on honors from the Citizens State Bank and Trust Company of Hiawatha.  Richter added 21 points and four treys while Westin Jacobsen was the only other Cobra to score in the game and had 10 points.  The biggest difference was turnovers as the Jackson Heights pressure forced 24 MH-MA miscues with the ball.  Luke Ervin scored 11 of his 15 game in the first half while Kevin Lykins added 11 for the Ravens who drop to 2-1 on the season.

The two teams will meet again in Atchison on February 5th.
