2016 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Day 1 Recap

The 2016 Twin Valley League tournament got underway on Saturday in Frankfort and there was plenty of action on the hardwood with 10 first round contests. Saturday's action is recapped below.

Girls 

#9 Linn vs. #8 Frankfort       (Frankfort won 60-48)

The host Frankfort Wildcats woke up the crowd in the early game as they jumped on Linn early and behind two strong individual performances and pesky pressure defense earned the 60-48 opening round TVL tournament win. Frankfort pounced on Linn early taking a 23-12 lead after the first quarter and the hot shooting of Rebecca Adams led Frankfort to a 37-24 lead at the half, as Adams had 16 points in the first half, hitting four three-pointers. The Wildcats made that lead hold up in the second half as Emilee Ebert took to carrying the scoring load scoring 15 of her 24 points in the second half. Ebert matched her season high with 24 points and Adams had her best game with 16 points and both earned co-Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA in the game as Frankfort improved to 4-6 on the year. Linn was led by 10 point performances from both Liza van der Merwe and Karysn Smith, as the Bulldogs with the loss fall to 2-6 on the season. 

#13 Onaga vs. #4 Hanover       (Hanover won 55-18)

The Hanover Wildcats took early control of the game against Onaga in the opening round of the TVL tournament and didn't look back getting a running clock on their way to the 55-18 win. It was 14-0 after the first quarter and Hanover posted a 15-5 second quarter to sit at 29-5 at the half and go on to win their sixth game of the season improving to 6-2, while Onaga fell to 0-9 on the year. Morganne Zabokrtsky led Hanover with 12 points, while Ashton Jueneman chipped in 11 and Macy Doebele added 10 points. Onaga in the loss was led Shay Duer who scored nine points. 

#12 Blue Valley vs. #5 Valley Heights        (Valley Heights won 68-35) 

The dynamic duo of Jo Roepke and Kayla Smith continued their phenomenal scoring run for the Valley Heights Mustangs in the opening round of the TVL tournament as the Mustangs dispatched Blue Valley 68-35. Roepke notched 30 points, while Smith tallied 20 as Valley Heights built a 10-point early leading 18-8 after the first quarter and used a 20-9 third quarter to take firm control and earn the win. The win pushes Valley Heights to 6-3 and is their fifth straight win. While, eight points from Megan Plummer led Blue Valley as they fell to 2-7 on the year. 

#11 Wetmore vs. #6 Troy        (Wetmore won 41-29) 

Wetmore Cardinals flew out of the gate to a solid start using pressure defense to create turnovers against Troy and turn those turnovers into some points on their way to the 41-29 win. The Cardinals established a 19-9 advantage after the first quarter led by Jill and McKayla Henry who each had six points in the first frame. That lead remained at 10 going into halftime but Troy responded and kept it close in the second half getting as close as four points but Wetmore finished it off for the win to avenge an earlier season loss to the Trojans. Dakota McQueen led the Cardinals with 10 points as they moved to 3-6 on the year, while Gerae Haverkamp chipped in nine points, but the play of McKayla Henry around the rim earned her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA as she finished with eight points. The loss sends Troy to 4-5 on the year and the Trojans were led by Makayla Ross who scored 11 points, while Madi Marriott chipped in nine points and Troy did go 10-10 from the free throw as a team. 

#10 Clifton-Clyde vs. #7 Doniphan West      (Clifton-Clyde won 45-35)

A pair of double figure scorers partnered with a 22-12 second half pushed the Clifton-Clyde Eagles to the win over Doniphan West in the opening round of the TVL tournament, as the Eagles won 45-35. Emily Coffman and Elizabeth Nobert tallied 16 and 13 points, respectively to spear head Clifton-Clyde to the win in a game that was tied at 23-23 at the half but won in the second half but Clifton-Clyde. The win puts Clifton-Clyde at 4-6 on the season, while Doniphan West falls to 2-5 on the year and was led by a nine point showing from Carlie Taylor.

Boys

#9 Frankfort vs. #8 Blue Valley      (Frankfort won 60-47 in Overtime)

It was the tightest game all day of the 10 played and needed overtime to decide the winner as a 19-6 overtime period propelled Frankfort to a 60-47 win over Blue Valley in the opening round of the TVL tournament. Blue Valley took a 23-18 lead into intermission but Frankfort had the game tied after three quarters and ultimately at the end of regulation it was tied, too. In overtime Ryan Kraushaar hit a couple of three-pointers early for the Wildcats and they had Blue Valley playing from behind the rest of the way to their third win of the season as they are now 3-7. Brenden Levi, Kraushaar and Adam Kenworthy all notched double figures with 15, 14 and 13 points, respectively for Frankfort. While, Blue Valley was led by Hadyn Budenbender who scored 30 of the teams 47 points as the Rams fell to 2-7 on the year with the loss. 

#13 Linn vs. #4 Troy      (Troy won 66-33) 

It was only 9-7 after the first quarter but that soon change as Troy used a 21-8 second quarter and 19-6 third quarter to cruise past Linn in the first round of the TVL tournament, winning 66-33. Eight different guys scored for the Trojans in the win that pushes them to 8-1 on the year, with Brody Winder leading the way with 16 points, while Cuttar Huss chipped in 15 points. Linn with the loss falls to 0-8 on the season and was led by Dillon Cooper who scored 12 points, while the Bulldogs struggled on the day only hitting 10 field goals. 

#12 Wetmore vs. #4 Hanover        (Hanover won 58-25) 

Hanover Wildcats jumped out early on Wetmore and brought home the 58-25 win in the first round of the TVL tournament as the Wildcats posted a 24-7 first quarter to take control of the game and with a 17-7 second quarter put things firmly in their favor. The win brings Hanover to 6-2 on the season as Michael Jueneman led the team in scoring in the win posting 16 points, while Will Bruna posted 10 points. The loss moves Wetmore to 1-9 on the year as Newt Smith led the Cardinals on the day with nine points. 

#11 Clifton-Clyde vs. #6 Axtell        (Axtell won 73-56) 

Hot shooting has led Axtell on their current winning streak and that hot shooting continued as they picked up the 73-56 win over Clifton-Clyde in the opening round of the TVL tournament. Axtell got off to a 6-0 start by Clifton-Clyde made it a 9-8 game, Axtell leading by one-point midway through the first quarter. The Axtell Eagles responded with a 16-2 run to close the quarter to lead 25-11 after one and go on to added to their lead throughout the contest, posting a 27-18 third quarter led by Colton Buessing raining in four three-pointers in the quarter. Buessing finished with a team best 21 points for Axtell earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA, while Kaleb Buessing added 18 points and both Mitchell and Adam Kuckelman tallied 13 and 12 points, respectively. The win moves Axtell's win streak to five-straight and their record to 7-5, while Clifton-Clyde falls to 1-9 on the season with the loss. Clifton-Clyde did have 10 guys score in the game led by an 11 point showing by Matt Barnes. 

#10 Onaga vs. #7 Valley Heights         (Valley Heights won 59-43)

Valley Heights came galloping out of the gates and continue their recent stretch of great play by taking an early 18-10 lead against Onaga after the first quarter and the Buffaloes were unable to recover as Valley Heights secured the win 59-43. Mustangs added to their halftime lead of 11 with a 9-0 start to the second half and ultimately a 15-1 third quarter. Anthony Edwards posted another double figure night for Valley Heights scoring 16, while Adrian Pishny stepped up and had new season high 13 points. Both performances earned Edwards and Pishny co-Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, as Valley Heights moved to 4-5 on the year and won for the third time in the last four games. Onaga in the loss had a trio of guys score all but four points on the night as Logan Marten posted 16 points to led the Buffaloes, while Tanner Marten scored 14 and Jace Fischer added eight, as Onaga fell to 2-7 on the year.
