2016 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Quarterfinals Recap

The 2016 Twin Valley League tournament continued on Monday with the Quarterfinal action in Frankfort and plenty of great performances were displayed. Below is a recap of all the action on the court on Monday.

Girls

#11 Wetmore vs. #3 Axtell          (Axtell won 50-39) 

Just like earlier this season it was a strong second quarter to lead Axtell to the win in the battle of the birds as the Eagles notched the 50-39 win in the TVL tourney Quarterfinals against Wetmore. Axtell jumped on top 6-0 early and held Wetmore scoreless until about the 3:40 mark in the first quarter the Cardinals were only down 12-8 after one quarter. The second quarter changed the game as the Eagles flew out to a 32-16 margin at halftime behind a 20-8 quarter lead by Bradie Schmitz who scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half. Wetmore chipped at the in the second half the Eagles fended them off for the win as Kiersten Talbot led the charge in the second half for Axtell with 10 of her 14 in the third and fourth quarters. Both Schmitz and Talbot earned co-Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA for their 14 point efforts, while Courtney Heinen notched 11 points for Axtell who won their eighth in a row and improved to 10-2. Wetmore with the loss fell to 3-7 on the year and were led by a season high from Gerae Haverkamp who scored 18 points. 

#5 Valley Heights vs. #4 Hanover       (Hanover won 61-44) 

A strong second half push and a trio of gals in double figures helped Hanover avenge one of their two losses on the season and get the best of Valley Heights 61-44 in the TVL tournament Quarterfinals. The Wildcats led just 23-19 at the half but with a 15-8 third quarter and 23-17 fourth ultimately picked up the win by double digits. Macy Doebele and Morganne Zabokrtsky each had 13 points for Hanover, while Ashton Jueneman chipped in 10 points as the Wildcats moved to 7-2 on the year. Valley Heights with the loss falls to 6-4 on the season, as they were led by Jo Roepke and Kayla Smith who accounted for all but six points for the Mustangs 44, each scoring 19 points on the night. 

#10 Clifton-Clyde vs. #2 Centralia          (Centralia won 53-26) 

The Panthers of Centralia pounced on Clifton-Clyde early and picked up their seventh win in a row winning 53-26 in the TVL tournament Quarterfinals. Using a late push in the first quarter behind nine points from Katie Glatczak and six points from Cassidy Haufler in the frame the Panthers led 18-9 going into the second. That lead was 27-14 at half and grew further with a 17-7 third quarter for the Panthers as they cruised to the win. Glatczak led the charge with 17 points for Centralia earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Haufler added 15 points and Mayda Stallbaumer joined the double figure party with 12 points as Centralia improved to 8-1. Baylie Bowser led Clifton-Clyd in the loss scoring 14 points, while the loss pushes Clifton-Clyde to 4-7 on the season. 

#8 Frankfort vs. #1 Washington County       (Frankfort 55-53 in Overtime) 

Down late in the contest in regulation Frankfort had Kyla Hardwick step up and hit a three-pointer to tie the game and send the contest to overtime, as Washington County had taken the lead in the final portion of regulation after Frankfort was leading but the three tied the contest and to overtime it went. In overtime Frankfort outscored Washington County 7-5 and earned the upset 55-53 win. Frankfort with the win improves to 5-6 on the season and was led by Emilee Ebert who scored 27 points, while Hardwick tallied 15 points, including the big game-tying three at the end of regulation. Washington County in the loss was led by Lauren Wyatt who scored 16 points, while Mandi Allerheiligen scored 11 points and the Tigers fell to 8-2 on the year.

Boys

#6 Axtell vs. #3 Centralia        (Centralia won 62-39) 

Centralia got off to a solid start until Axtell made a run and it was 11-8 Panthers after one quarter but Centralia over in the second quarter and the Eagles struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities as the Panthers posted a 14-5 frame and lead 25-13 at halftime. The lead continued to grow in the second half ultimately leading to Centralia claiming the 62-39 win. John Johnson led the Panthers on the day with 16 points tying a season high and scoring 10 in the first half to set the tone for Centralia, also earning him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Dustin Talley and Braden Deters added 13 and 12 points, respectively as the Panthers moved to 8-1 on the season. The loss drops Axtell to 7-6 on the year and they were led by Colton Buessing who scored 13 points and Kaleb Buessing who chipped in 12 points. 

#5 Hanover vs. #4 Troy           (Troy won 66-59) 

The Trojans of Troy started fast leading by as many as 11 early against Hanover but with a 19-11 second quarter it was the Wildcats of Hanover leading 31-30 at intermission of the TVL tournament Quarterfinal contest. Troy pushed back and regained the lead in the third and finished on the game to beat Hanover for the second time this season, this time winning 66-59. The duo of Cuttar Huss and Wil Smith led Troy with 25 and 22 points, respectively while Reid Greaser added 11 points in the win as the Trojans moved to 9-1 on the year. Hanover with the loss fell to 6-3 on the season and was led by Will Bruna who scored 24 points, while Devin Jueneman added 17 points. 

#7 Valley Heights vs. #2 Doniphan West          (Valley Heights won 59-54)

The energy was electric early in the battle of the Mustangs and it stayed that way throughout as each team traded blows back and forth. Doniphan West held the lead most of the first half until Valley Heights took it late in the second quarter, but a three-pointer by Cooper Leach and two free throws by Trevor Taylor tied the game at 22-22 late in the first half. Leach then added two more free throws to give Doniphan West the lead but Adrian Pishny hit a layup right before the buzzer to tie the game at 24-24 at halftime. The third quarter belonged to Valley Heights as they hit four three's by Jarrett Whitson and Bryan Yungeburg and outscored Doniphan West 20-9 in the quarter to lead by 11 going into the final eight minutes. Doniphan West fought back and had the game tied at 54-54 late. Valley Heights took the lead at 56-54 and Doniphan West had an opportunity to perhaps win it with a three or tie with a two in the final 10 seconds. Austin Taylor shot a three from the top of the key and it misfired by Lane Spiker had the put back chance and it fell off the rim, too and Valley Heights hit some free throws to secure the 59-54 win. Anthony Edwards and Whitson led Valley Heights with 19 and 14 points, respectively earning co-Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while helping Valley Heights move to 5-5 on the season. The loss is the first of the season for Doniphan West as they are now 7-1 and they were led by Austin Taylor who scored 15 points. 

#9 Frankfort vs. #1 Washington County       (Washington County won 70-39) 

The Washington County remained unbeaten as they cruised past Frankfort in the TVL tournament Quarterfinals with a 70-39 win. The Tigers pounced early with a 24 point first quarter to lead 24-13 after one and with a 21-12 second quarter held a 45-25 halftime lead on their way to the win. A 21 point performance by Kyle McGatlin led the Tigers, while Taylor Metz, Cole Thompson and Nathan Welch all added 10 points each as Washington County moved to 10-0 on the season. Frankfort with the loss falls to 3-8 on the year and was led by Adam Kenworthy in the loss who scored seven points.
