2016 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Tuesday Consolation Games Recap

The 2016 Twin Valley League tournament rolled along on Tuesday night with some consolation games between teams that suffered opening round losses on Saturday. 

Coming up later this week the girls and boys Semifinals will both be broadcasted on 92.1 KMZA on Thursday it will be a girls double-header for the Semifinals with Frankfort vs. Hanover at 6:00pm and Axtell vs. Centralia at 7:30pm, while Friday will feature the boys Semifinals of Troy vs. Washington County at 6:00pm and Valley Heights vs. Centralia at 7:30pm. Friday's boys Semifinals will be simulcast on 103.9 KNZA along with 92.1 KMZA. While the Championship games will be carried on 92.1 KMZA on Saturday evening. 

Also at the end of the tournament a 92.1 KMZA All-TVL Tournament team will selected and announced during the Championship games on the radio and posted with the final recap of the tournament here on MSCsports.net.

Girls

Onaga vs. Linn         (Linn won 31-14) 

It was tight early as Linn held just a 6-4 lead after the first quarter but behind a 10-4 second period the Bulldogs pulled ahead 16-8 at intermission and went on to grab the 31-14 win over Onaga. Linn held Onaga to just 10 points in the second while scoring 15 themselves. Liza van der Merwe led Linn in the contest with 10 points, while Kaitlin Ohlde chipped in nine points as Linn moved to 3-6 on the year with the win. Onaga with the loss fell to 0-10 and were led by Shay Duer who scored 10 points.  

Doniphan West vs. Troy           (Troy won 55-31) 

A huge second quarter and a trio of gals in double figures pushed Troy past Doniphan West on Tuesday night as the Trojans picked up the 55-31 win. Doniphan West held the 10-7 lead after the first quarter but the Trojans exploded for 23 points in the second period, outscoring Doniphan West 23-9 in the quarter and using that to push them to the win. Kassi Meng led Troy on the night scoring 14 points, while Blair Weishaar chipped in 10 points and Makayla Ross tallied nine points as the Trojans moved to .500 on the season at 5-5. Doniphan West with the loss fell to 2-6 on the year and was led by Carlie Taylor who scored nine points in the game.  

Thursday

Consolation Game - #13 Onaga vs. #12 Blue Valley 4:30pm
Semifinals - #8 Frankfort vs. #4 Hanover 6:00pm (on 92.1 KMZA)
Semifinals - #3 Axtell vs. #2 Centralia 7:30pm (on 92.1 KMZA)
Consolation Semifinals - #5 Valley Heights vs. #1 Washington County 6:00pm
Consolation Semifinals - #11 Wetmore vs. #10 Clifton-Clyde 7:30pm 

Saturday

Consolation Game - #9 Linn vs. #7 Doniphan West 10:00am 
Consolation Game - #12 Blue Valley vs. #6 Troy 10:00am

Boys

Linn vs. Blue Valley              (Blue Valley won 43-42) 

Blue Valley held the 15-7 early lead after the first quarter and appeared to perhaps be in control of the game against Linn but the Bulldogs closed the lead to four by halftime and using a 10-4 fourth quarter made it interesting down the stretch and the Rams held on for the 43-42 win. Blue Valley with the win moved to 3-7 on the season and was led by Bradley Young who scored 16 points, while Hadyn Budenbender chipped in 13 points. Linn with the loss fell to 0-9 and were led by Chase McGatlin who scored 12 points, while Dillon Cooper chipped in 11 points.  

Clifton-Clyde vs. Onaga               (Onaga won 45-31) 

Onaga Buffaloes picked up their third win of the season by beating Clifton-Clyde for the second time this season. The Buffaloes held a 20-13 advantage at halftime and led by seven headed into the fourth quarter when they finished the game off with a 14-7 fourth period earning the 45-31 win. Logan Marten paced Onaga with 14 points, while Jackson Glessner and Tanner Marten each had eight points as Onaga moved to 3-7 on the year. Clifton-Clyde with the loss fell to 1-10 on the year and was led by Michael Cyr who scored eight points.  

Friday
