2016 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Friday Semifinals & More Recap

The 2016 Twin Valley League tournament continued on Friday night after being postponed on Thursday and it was an action packed day. 

The final day of action is set and the both the girls and boys Championship games will be broadcast on 92.1 KMZA at 6:00pm & 7:30pm with Hanover vs. Centralia in the girls contest and Valley Heights vs. Troy in the boys matchup. 

Also at the end of the tournament a 92.1 KMZA All-TVL Tournament team will selected and announced during the Championship games on the radio and posted with the final recap of the tournament here on MSCsports.net.

Girls

Onaga vs. Blue Valley      (Blue Valley won 39-29) - Consolation Game

The day kicked off with consolation game action and the Onaga and Blue Valley girls squared off against each other. Blue Valley held just a 9-6 after the first quarter but the Rams worked out to an 21-8 halftime lead with a 12-2 second quarter and used that to push themselves to the 39-29 win. Blue Valley with the win is now 3-7 on the year and was led by Tessa Henry who scored 12 points, while Megan Plummer tallied nine points. Onaga with the loss falls to 0-11 and was led by Shay Duer and Megan Kufahl who scored 11 and nine points, respectively. 

Valley Heights vs. Washington County       (Valley Heights won 47-31) - Consolation Semifinal

The Valley Heights Mustangs doubled up Washington County in each of the first two quarters win the first quarter 8-4 and the second 14-7 to lead 22-11 at the half and ultimately secured the win with a 14-9 fourth quarter, winning 47-31. The duo of Jo Roepke and Kayla Smith scored all but six of the Mustangs points in the contest posting 25 and 16 points, respectively as Valley Heights moved to 7-4 on the year. Washington County suffered their second straight loss and fell to 8-3 on the year with Annie Otott leading the way with nine points. 

Wetmore vs. Clifton-Clyde      (Clifton-Clyde won 38-36) - Consolation Semifinal 

It was a tight contest to the end but with 16 points from Elizabeth Nobert and 11 points from Baylie Bowser the Eagles won the battle of the birds topping Wetmore 38-36. Wetmore worked to an 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter but Clifton-Clyde carried a 21-20 lead into halftime, using a 14-9 second quarter. The win puts Clifton-Clyde at 5-7 on the season as they held on for the win over Wetmore. The Cardinals fall to 3-8 on the year but did have a trio of gals in double figures as Dakota McQueen had 12 points, Gerae Haverkamp and McKayla Henry each scored 10 points. 

Frankfort vs. Hanover       (Hanover won 47-39) - Semifinal

Hanover jumped on Frankfort early with Ashton Jueneman leading the charge but the Frankfort responded to claw right back into the contest. Up 15-10 after the first quarter Hanover carried that five-point lead into halftime despite Frankfort having chances to take the lead. Hanover grew the lead out with a 13-9 third quarter but Frankfort had the game within one-point several times in the second half and late in the game just never was able to take the lead as Hanover hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the 47-39 win. 

Hanover moves to 9-2 on the year with the victory and was led by Macy Doebele who finished with 13 points, while Ashton Jueneman who got the offense going early with six of her 12 points in the first quarter earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. The loss sends Frankfort to 5-7 on the year as they were led by Emilee Ebert who scored 18 points. 

Axtell vs. Centralia      (Centralia won 67-60) - Semifinal 

The lead changed hands a multitude of times over the course of the game but down the stretch it was Centralia able to snatch up the win, 67-60. Axtell led 15-14 after the first quarter and 25-23 going into intermission but the game was tied at 42-42 going into the fourth, with each team have multi-possession leads in the second half. The Panthers used some late free throws and a 10-12 free throw performance in the second half to help them improve to 9-1 (12-14 overall free throws), as Cassidy Haufler finished with a season 21 points, including a nine point fourth quarter earning her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA for Centralia. Katie Glatczak and Mayda Stallbaumer each chipped in 17 and 12 points, respectively. 

Axtell with the loss falls to 10-3 on the year and was led by Courtney Heinen who scored 15 points, while Megan Buessing tallied 14 points and Kiersten Talbot scored 13 points. 

Saturday

Boys

Linn vs. Wetmore        (Wetmore won 47-40) - Consolation Game

The Cardinals flew out to a 12-4 lead after just the first quarter but had a dog fight on their hands as Linn battlle back in the game throughout the contest and Wetmore had to secure the 47-40 win. The win the second for Wetmore on the season both against Linn as the Cardinals move to 2-9 on the year and had a trio of guys finish in double figures led by Trey Craig who scored 17 points, whil Ethan Osterhaus chipped in 14 points and Newt Smith scored 11 points. Linn in the loss falls to 0-10 on the year and was led by Dillon Cooper who scored 11 points. 

Frankfort vs. Hanover      (Hanover won 58-46) - Consolation Semifinal

The second half put together by Hanover prove to be enough to get past Frankfort as Hanover started the game off with a 14-6 first quarter but Frankfort answered with a 18-11 second and trailed just by one-point at halftime. But it was a 33-22 second half but Hanover that provided the difference in the contest leading them to the 58-46 win. Three guys in double figures led Hanover as Michael Jueneman scored 16 points and both Devin Jueneman and Trey Loshe each added 13 points as Hanover improved to 8-3 on the season. The loss puts Frankfort at 3-9 on the year as Adam Kenworthy and Brenden Levi led Frankfort in the loss with 20 and 15 points, respectively. 

Axtell vs. Doniphan West      (Doniphan West won 67-48) - Consolation Semifinal 

Donpihan West bounced back from their first loss of the season as they galloped past Axtell 67-48. The Mustangs led by four after the first quarter and using 21-16 second quarter took a 35-26 lead into halftime. That lead grew in the second half and with a 23-35 night from the free throw line Doniphan West improved to 8-1 with the win as Austin Taylor scored 22 to lead the Mustangs. Levi Watts chipped in 15 points and Lane Spiker scored 12 points. Axtell in the loss had Brice Koch and Adam Kuckelman post 18 and 11 points, respectively as they fell to 7-7 on the year. 

Troy vs. Washington County       (Troy won 47-44) - Semifinal 

Troy's lone loss of the year was a tough road loss at Washington County and this time the Trojans got revenge and in dramatic fashion as the game was tied at 44-44 late and the Tigers had the ball but Konnor Penning was called for a travel and turned the ball over. The Trojans had the ball with just a few seconds left and Reid Greaser took the inbounds pass dribbled past half court and at the buzzer nailed a game winning three-point bucket for Troy to take the 47-44 win. The lead change hands multiple times in the first half with Troy holding a 25-22 lead at intermission and the Trojans led all second half until 5:54 remaining when the Tigers took the 39-37 lead. Troy quickly regained the lead but end the game was tied late and the late heroics came for the Trojans to get the win. 

Greaser finished with 11 points and the game winner earning him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, while Cuttar Huss scored 14 points as the Trojans moved to 10-1. Washington County suffered their first loss of the season moving to 10-1 and were led by Penning who finished with 16 points, while Kyle McGatlin scored 12 points. 

Valley Heights vs. Centralia      (Valley Heights won 60-57 in OT) 

The mojo continued for the Valley Heights Mustangs as they pulled out their fourth straight win and fifth in the last six games by taking down Centralia in overtime 60-57. After a scoreless two minutes to start the game Valley Heights opened the scoring with a 5-0 run, only to see Centralia go on a 7-0 run but it was tied at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Centralia pounced on a few opportunities late in the first half and carried a 25-21 lead into halftime, but the game was tied at the end of three. Late in regulation both teams had opportunities but came up short and to overtime it went. In overtime Valley Heights pushed to a seven point lead but Centralia answered getting back within two as both teams hit big shots and the Mustangs ultimately made free throws in the final minute of the game to hold on for the win. 

Anthony Edwards led Valley Heights with 14 points, while Harrison Blaske and Logan Woodyard each chipped in 11 points. Blaske made several great plays off the bench for Valley Heights and that earned him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA, as the Mustangs improved to 6-5 on the year. Centralia with the loss falls to 8-2 on the season and was led by Braden Deters who scored 18 points, while Dustin Talley chipped in 12 points. 

Saturday
