Valley Falls Tournament - Consolation Semifinals: ACCHS Falls Short, Oskaloosa Downed at the Buzzer
By Jonny Kane

ACCHS vs. Cornerstone

As the ACCHS Tigers fought for their first win of the season Friday night, they found themselves in an unfamiliar situation:  within striking distance late in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers trimmed a 12 point deficit to five with 3:15 left, but missed opportunities down the stretch allowed the Cornerstone Saints to advance to the consolation championship of the Valley Falls tournament with a 53-42 win.

Neither offense was able to get much going early with the game tied at 11 after the first quarter. Cair Paravel finally kick started things in the second drilling three treys in the quarter, including one at the buzzer by Trevor Poage, to take a 26-19 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, the Tiger offense struggled to find the bottom of the basket mustering just six points total in the third quarter to make the deficit 12 heading into the fourth.

ACCHS senior Lane Bowen tried to will the Tigers to their first win with 10 fourth quarter points, but the Saints did just enough to escape.

Cornerstone (7-5) will take on Cair Paravel (8-3) in the consolation championship Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ACCHS (0-11) goes up against Oskaloosa (2-10) at noon.

Cornerstone: Noah Frederick – 16, Cody Heiland – 9, Andrew Mercer – 8, Trevor Poage – 7, Caleb Powell – 7, Matt Hochuli – 6.

ACCHS: Trevor Smith – 15, Lane Bowen – 14, Ryder McAlexander – 7, Austin Coder – 4, Tate Smith – 2.

Oskaloosa vs. Cair Paravel

With three seconds left and the game tied at 71, Cair Paravel head coach Mike Malloy had enough time to draw up one final play.

He decided to put the basketball into the hands of his senior leader Austin Anderson.

Anderson caught a pass at the top of the key, took two dribbles to the right wing, and went up for the shot as the buzzer sounded.

Anderson’s shot hit nothing but the bottom of the net, and the Cair Paravel Lions advanced to the consolation championship with a 74-71 win.

Unlike the first consolation semifinal of the night, both teams started red hot with the contest tied at 20 after the first quarter. Not much changed in the second, besides Cair Paravel winning the quarter 19-16 to take a 39-36 lead into the break.

Oskaloosa closed the gap to two after the third, setting up the fantastic finish as each team traded 12-0 runs in the fourth before Anderson heroics.

Cair Paravel (8-3) battles Cornerstone (7-5) in the consolation championship Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Oskaloosa (2-10) takes on ACCHS (0-11).
