Valley Heights Girls & Boys Notch Road Wins Over Wetmore

Valley Heights Mustangs traveled to Wetmore on Friday night for a Twin Valley League showdown and came away with a pair of road victories. The lady Mustangs outdueled Wetmore in a high scoring affair winning 72-67, while the Mustangs boys galloped out to a early lead and won 72-67. 

The girls varsity game was filled with great individual performances and shots raining in from all over the court as it was a duel between both Wetmore and Valley Heights. The Mustangs jumped on Wetmore early with a 6-0 run in the first 31 seconds on the game capitalizing on two early Cardinal turnovers. Wetmore after a early timeout gathered themselves and answered back with five three's in the first quarter and an 11-point frame by Gerae Havekamp to give Wetmore a 27-16 advantage to end the first quarter. The lead set at 41-33 by halftime with Wetmore leading but tha lead dwindled in the third and was only two points going into the fourth. In the fourth the lead traded hands several times and tied up late in the game Valley Heights made a few plays and finished out the game for the 72-67 win. 

Brandi Jo Roepke led Valley Heights with 39 points scoring eight points or more in each quarter and took over the game for the Mustangs shouldering the scoring load especially early in the game earning her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA. Kayla Smith chipped in 19 points in the contest, scoring 15 in the second half, helping Valley Heights move to 13-5 on teh season and 9-2 in the TVL. 

Wetmore with the loss fell to 6-12 on the season and 2-8 in the League, while suffering their eighth single digit loss this year. Haverkamp led Wetmore with 27 points hitting seven three's in the game, surpassing her previous season high by 11 points. While three other Cardinals scored and all posted double figures with Jill Henry finishing with 16 points, McKayla Henry adding 13 points and Dakota McQueen adding 11 points. 

In the boys varsity contest the Valley Heights Mustangs jumped on Wetmore early with a 21-7 first quarter lead by the early play of Keaton DeWalt and Anthony Edwards who posted nine and 10 points, respectively in the first quarter. Headed into halftime Valley Heights lead 36-17 and while Wetmore did out score the Mustangs in the third quarter Valley Heights closed out the game with a 22-14 fourth quarter behind a barrage of three-pointer from Bryan Yungeberg who hit five three's in the fourth and six in the game, helping Valley Heights claim the 67-43 road win. 

Yungeberg finished with a new season best 20 points, while Edwards notched 16 points and DeWalt finished with 11 points all in the first half. The performance of Yungeberg late in the game and DeWalt early in the contest earned the guys co-Community National Bank "Players to Bank On" on KMZA. With the win Valley Heights moved to 10-8 on the season and 6-5 in the TVL. 

Wetmore with the loss fell to 3-15 on the year and 1-9 in the TVL, while Trey Craig posted a new season high in the loss tallying 20 points, scoring 10 in each half. 

The season continues for Wetmore next Friday, February 19th on the road at Clifton-Clyde and Valley Heights will have the next week off and be back in action on Tuesday, February 23rd at Axtell.
