Several Area Schools Have Top Performers at Onaga Cross Country Invite

A few area cross country meets were postponed or cancelled on Thursday due to the wet weather during the week but at the Onaga Invitational the start gun fired off and the runners were off for another competition. 

Several area teams among others competed against each other on the day running at Cool Springs golf course as Onaga played host to the action. In the boys race it was three Top 10 performances that helped the Axtell Eagles fly to a first place team finish with 43 points on the beating out Jackson Heights by 18 points as the Cobras took second and Rock Creek boys finished third. Wetmore and St. Mary's Academy round out the Top five boy’s team performances as the Cardinals just edged out St. Mary's for fourth. Kaw Valley, Valley Heights, Washington County, Frankfort, Centralia and Onaga finished out the boys team performances finishing sixth through 11th, respectively. 

In the girls race it was a pair of non-area schools in the top two spots as Kaw Valley won the team title on the day with 24 points and Rock Creek took second. Centralia lady Panthers earned third as a team just four points ahead of Jackson Heights who took fourth, while Valley Heights finished fifth and Washington County sixth in the girl’s team standings. 

Jackson Heights Cobras led the way for the area teams with the most Top 20 finishers with seven and leading that charge was a time of 21:30.72 in the girls race to claim first place for Faith Little. Little won the girls race by around 1:18, while her teammate Skyla Howe earned a 13th place finish. In the boys race the Cobras had five Top 20 finishers as Dalton Chartier, Drew Holliday, Xavier Fritz, Mark Mavrovich and Lane Thomas placed 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 19th, respectively. 

Valley Heights, Axtell and Centralia all had four Top 20 finishes on the day between their boys and girls runners. For the Mustangs they were led by Adrian Pishny who posted a time of 17:24.43 to take first place again this season, while a time of 19:25.61 earned Alex Hardin a ninth place finish. Ilexus Rose and DeAndra Woodyard in the girl’s race claimed 17th and 19th place finishes for Valley Heights. 

The Axtell boys claimed the top team spot led by a trio of Top 10 times as Burke Deters posted a time of 18:09.68 to take third, while Oliver Schmitz placed seventh (19:16.49) and Quinn Buessing finished tenth (19:37.35). In the girls race Olivia Kuckelman continued her strong year with a third place finish posting a time of 23:03.83. 

Centralia lady Panthers had the best area team performance in the girl’s competition and were led by Tamra and Sadie Jones who finished fifth and sixth, respectively behind times of 23:42.94 and 23:48.63, while Emma Holthaus placed 18th for Centralia. In the boys competition Dylan Boeckman grabbed a 13th place showing. 

Wetmore Cardinals had both Aaron Achten and Jonathan Hladky-Bailey notch strong performances as Aaron posted a time of 18:23.64 to take fourth place, while Jonathan finished just outside of the Top 10 placing 11th in the boys competition. 

Frankfort Wildcats were led by Brodric Shirley who with a time of 17:40.22 earned second place in the boy’s race, while Amburley Kokoruda placed 20th in the girl’s competition. 

Eric Miller and Tyler Simmons led the Washington County Tigers on the day as Miller earned eighth place with a time of 19:17.77, while Simmons placed 18th.
