By Tom Kautz

The 2016-17 basketball season began with a pair of wins for the Atchison Redmen and Lady Red Friday night at home as they hosted ACCHS.

The girls game was close throughout as the Lady Red took a 44-34 win.  42 of those points were scored by the starters.  Kadejah Ross hit 4 treys on her way to a game high 12 for AHS, and Katie McCoole (Bank of Atchison Player of the Game) had 8 of her 10 points in the second quarter as she helped her team to a lead they would never relinquish.  ACCHS was paced by Katie Beien with 12, including an 8 of 10 performance at the free throw line.

In the nightcap, Atchison scored the first 22 points of the game and overpowered the Tigers 80-34.  Tahj Helms (Bank of Atchison Player of the Game) had all of his game high 22 points by the end of the third quarter and was joined in double-figure scoring by three of his teammates.  ACCHS was paced by Ryder McAlexander with 12.
