NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With a 16-6 run early in the second half, Kansas State opened its 2012-13 road schedule with a 62-47 win over Tennessee State on Tuesday night. The Wildcats, who improved to 3-0 for the seventh time in the last nine seasons, were led by sophomore guard Haley Texada, who poured in a career-high off the bench.

Texada pulled the Wildcats out of a sluggish start to the second half by scoring nine straight points and finish with a career-high 17. The product of Frisco, Texas, registered 14 of her points in the second half to spark K-State.

Joining Texada in double figures was senior guard Brittany Chambers with 14 points. The All-America candidate hauled in nine rebounds and dished out four assists on Tuesday night. Chambers now ranks 14th in school history for career rebounds with 605 and ranks 16th in the program’s history with 252 career assists.

Kansas State used an early 13-0 run in the first half to jump out to a 13-2 lead on Tennessee State. Chantay Caron converted a pair of layups to jump start the run, while Chambers put on the finishing touches with her 242nd career three-point field goal. Chambers finished the night ranked 12th in Big 12 history with 243 career three-point field goals made.

Tennessee State cut the K-State lead to three on three separate occasions before the end of the half, including the halftime K-State lead of 28-25. Aiding K-State’s first half edge was junior Kendra Spresser. Spresser registered the Wildcats’ final four points of the opening stanza with a layup on an offensive rebound and a pair of free throws. Spresser finished the night with a career-high nine points and 12 rebounds, including nine on the defensive glass.

In the second half, K-State was boosted by four points from Chambers followed by nine straight points from Texada to build a 48-32 lead with 12:33 remaining. The Wildcats were able to build its lead to 58-38 with 5:03 remaining in the game to comfortably distance themselves from the Lady Tigers.

For the night, K-State shot .359 from the field and held Tennessee State without a conversion from beyond the arc on 10 attempts. The K-State defense also forced the Lady Tigers into 19 turnovers on the night.
