43 Area Wrestlers Qualify for State With Top Finishes at Regionals

State bids were up for grabs over the weekend on the mats as wrestlers competed for the right to earn a bid to the State tournament next weekend. After strong performances at Regionals 43 area wrestlers qualified for State in either Class 4A or 3-2-1A competition. 

In Class 4A leading the charge for the area was the performance of Marysville as the Bulldogs wrestled their way to the team Regional title finishing with 192.5 total points winning by over 40 points. A pair of individual Regional champions led Marysville as Gabe Capp (145lbs) and Storm Slupianek (160lbs) each earned first place at Regionals. Capp registered a 3-0 day with three pinfall wins in 1:01, 1:15 and 2:56, while Slupianek went 4-0 with three pinfall wins in 1:47, 3:14 and 3:40 and finished his day with a 6-0 decision win in the Championship bout. Four Bulldog grapplers notched second place finishes at Regionals as Isaac Novotny (106lbs), Arteyau Hornbeak (170lbs), Garron Champoux (182lbs) and Seth Mooradian (285lbs) going 3-1 in action for the first three guys and 2-1 for Mooradian. 

Jonny Crome (132lbs) and Noah Ackerman (152lbs) each earned third place finishes for Marysville, while fourth place finishes by Jakob Snellings (120lbs) and Ethan Crownover (126lbs) earned them trips to State. 

At the Holton Class 4A Regional it was the host Holton highlighting the area performances finishing third as a team and had eight wrestlers qualify for State. Taygen Fletcher (120lbs) and Kolby Roush (126lbs) each led Holton by winning Regional titles going 3-0 and 2-0 in action, respectively. Fletcher won by pinfall in 35 seconds and 2:48 and then won a tight 1-0 decision in the Championship bout, while Roush won by pinfall 1:19 and then a 3-0 decision in the Championship match. Lawson Henry (138lbs) and Kyler Tannahill (285lbs) each went 2-1 on the mats at Regionals to earn second place finishes for Holton. Jake Barnes (106lbs), Konnor Tannahill (182lbs) and Austin Rollet (220lbs) all picked up third place finishes for the Wildcats, while Killian O'Connor (195lbs) also qualified for State by finishing fourth place. 

A pair of Atchison wreslters also qualified for State in Class 4A as Riley Smith (195lbs) went 2-1 in action to earn second place, while Jayden Watkins (126lbs) earned third place to earn a bid to the State tournament. 

In Class 3-2-1A all the area wrestlers in action at the Silver Lake Regional and eight area schools had at least one wrestler qualify for State. 

Behind seven State qualifers the Riverside Cyclones finished as Regional runner-up as a team. Scott Resler (145lbs) continued to dominate the competition as he won the Regional title by going 4-0 in competition winning by pinfall in :31, :54 and 2:56 and won the Championship bout 20-5 by technical fall. Beau Horn (126lbs) and Derrick Karn (132lbs) each went 3-1 in action to earn second place finishes for Riverside. Third place finishes were earned by Luke Horn (138lbs), Kinstin Juhl (152lbs) and Jacob MacKnight (195lbs), while Brayden Seimears (160lbs) placed fourth to earn a spot at State. 

Perry Lecompton finished fifth as a team at Regionals but only had three wrestlers qualify for State. Both Kyle Bonham (285lbs) and Thad Metcalfe (126lbs) each recorded third place finishes, while Collin Rossillon (220lbs) took fourth place. 

Sabetha Bluejays are sending four wrestlers to State after registering Top four finishes at Regionals as the Bluejays as a team took sixth at Regionals at Silver Lake. Elliot Strahm (285lbs) posted a 3-0 day to win the Regional title winning all three matches by pinfall in :22, 1:19 and 1:48. Brandon Brownlee (145lbs) put together a strong 3-1 performance to take second place, while both Kaden Dillon (113lbs) and Kamden Brownlee (152lbs) each earned fourth place at Regionals. 

Three third place finishes at Regionals earned a trio of Oskaloosa Bears trips to the Class 3-2-1A State tournament. Triston Hopkins (145lbs), Jared Miller (182lbs) and Christopher King (220lbs) each all posted a third place finish for Oskaloosa. 

Royal Valley is set to send a pair of wrestlers to State as Brian Shane (285lbs) and Bryce Garrison (160lbs) notched second and third place finishes, respectively. Shane went 2-1 in action to earn his second place finish. 

A pair of Pleasant Ridge Rams are headed to the Class 3-2-1A State tournament as Trevor Ragland (106lbs) went 3-1 in action to take second place, while Luke Oatney (138lbs) registered a fourth place finish. 

After going 3-1 in action and finishing second Doniphan West Mustang, Zeb Speer (160lbs) is headed to the Class 3-2-1A State tournament. 

ACCHS will be represented by Colton Scholz (120lbs) at the State tournament as he earned a fourth place at Regionals to qualify for State. 

The State tournament is set for Friday and Saturday, February 23-24th in Salina for Class 4A and in Hays for Class 3-2-1A. (Stay tuned to 103.9 KNZA radio for hourly updates from State wrestling on both days)
