Despite holding Lyndon to 21 points under their season average Friday night, the Jackson Heights boys’ basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 39-32 loss to the top-seeded and undefeated Tigers in the semifinals of the Class 2A Alma-Wabaunsee sub-state.

After recording the game’s opening basket on a lay-up by senior Braden Dohl, the Cobras went scoreless the remainder of the first quarter. Luckily for Jackson Heights their defense held Lyndon to just 9 points in the first quarter to keep the Cobras within striking distance.

Jackson Heights finally got things going in the second quarter as junior Levi Olberding notched 5 second quarter points to help the Cobras outscore the Tigers in the quarter 8-4, but Lyndon still took a 13-10 lead into halftime.

The Cobras came out of the break firing on all cylinders to begin the third quarter to take their first lead since it was 2-0 with a 5-0 run in the first 15 seconds of the quarter, as Lane Thomas hit a 3-pointer before Brady Holliday recorded a steal and lay-up.

Lyndon responded with a run of their own, as the Tigers came back with eight straight points to take the lead back and also take a 4-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Cobras did all they could in the fourth quarter to stay within striking distance down the stretch, but in the end the Tigers hit enough free throws to ice the game going 6 of 10 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

The Jackson Heights defense was stifling all game long, as the Cobras held the Tigers leading scorer Dexton Swinehart to 12 points under his season average of 23 a game while holding Lyndon to 21 points under their season average as a team.

Jackson Heights ends the year at 14-6, and send off seniors Brady Holliday and Braden Dohl who finish their high school careers with 74 wins and a state championship in 2015.

Jackson Heights: Levi Olberding – 11, Kolby Rethman – 8, Lane Thomas – 6, Braden Dohl – 6, Brady Holliday – 2.

Lyndon: Jamie Reed – 13, Dexton Swinehart – 11, Shaugn Reed – 6, Mason Krause – 5, Nathan Miller – 3, Levi Stevicks – 1.
