Spots in Class 1A sub-state tournaments were on the line Thursday night at Onaga high school on the girls side and it was Doniphan West along with Centralia each advancing to Saturday’s regional championship.

 Semifinal #1

From start to finish the Doniphan West girls dominated Troy to advance to Saturday’s championship game taking down the Trojans 53-23.

The Mustangs started fast and never looked back, leading 14-0 after the first quarter knocking down three 3-pointers by three different players.

Troy finally got the offense rolling in the second quarter outscoring Doniphan West 9-8, but after the big first quarter the Mustangs still led by 13 points at the half.

Doniphan West put the game away out of halftime, as junior MaKinley Smith scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Mustang lead grew to 23 point going into the fourth quarter.

Smith finished with a game-high 18 points with 15 coming in the second half for the Mustangs (13-10), while Heidi Leach added 11.

Semifinal #2

In the most exciting game of the night the Centralia girls advanced to the regional championship game Saturday by holding off a late Valley Falls comeback to hang on and win 56-48.

Centralia started strong jumping out to a 9-3 lead after the first quarter, and extended their lead to eight at halftime, 25-17 behind 9 points from senior Maegan Koch.

The Dragons didn’t go down without a fight though, as Valley Falls pulled within one going into the fourth quarter behind 8 points from senior Reagan Kirkwood and outscoring the Panthers 20-13 in the third.

The key for Centralia in the fourth was clutch free throw shooting, as Centralia was in the double-bonus the entire fourth quarter and took advantage knocking down 7-of-10 shots from the stripe.

Centralia struggled from the line as a whole in the game making just 18-of-36 foul shots, while Koch stepped up to lead the charge with 20 points including 11 in the second half.
