Nemaha Valley & Sabetha Split League Showdown on the Hardwood

Girls

It was cold shooting night for both the Lady Bluejays and Lady Raiders on the night but the Bluejays avoid the long droughts on the night enough to top Nemaha Valley 33-17. Sabetha took and early lead and lead it 16-10 at the half at home in this rival showdown.

Bluejays went on to outscore the Raiders 17-6 in the second half to take control of the ballgame in what was a slow grind it out game with heavy defense and turnovers by both squads on the night. Sabetha would go 10-18 from the charity stripe and use the inside game to take control of the contest.

Senior, Ashley Annan lead the way with 16 points on the night scoring 11 in the second half to earn the Community National Bank of Seneca and Sabetha "Player to Bank On" award for the girls contest. Annan's, running mate, senior Kacey Reiger chipped in nine points of her own in the game.

For Nemaha Valley, five players registered points by no one scored over five points with senior, Lindsay Peterson leading the way with five.

Sabetha who jumped into the Class 3A KBCA rankings this week at number 10, remains unbeaten on the season, improving to 4-0 with the win. For Nemaha Valley, they fell to 1-3 with the loss having fell in their last three games.

Sabetha next hits the hardwood against Santa Fe Trail on the road on Friday and Nemaha Valley will be on the road Friday, also at Perry Lecompton.

Boys

In a rival matchup you can always throw out the records, history and etc because each team always gets ready for game against their rival more than other games and the Nemaha Valley, Sabetha rivalry isn't any different.

Like the girls contest it was a low scoring affair when the boys squared off but the game was played with a faster pace. It was a tie ball game after the first quarter 8-8, then Sabetha took the lead into the half 17-14 at home for the Bluejays. The Raiders responded in the second half with a 9-4 third quarter and 13-8 fourth quarter to gain the 36-29 win.

Nemaha Valley took control of the game with post scoring by seniors, Drew Steinlage and Creighton Brinker who scored 20 of the 22 second half points for the Raiders. Steinlage sparked the Raider run with a pair of baskets in the post in the third on his way to nine points on the night, while Brinker then took over in the latter part of the third and the entire fourth quarter scoring 18 points in the game. Steinlage with his high energy play inside grabbing rebounds, scoring and making intangible plays to earn the Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" award for the night.

For Sabetha senior, McKenzie McAfee lead the Bluejays in the loss with nine points, registering eight of them in the first half but was held to one point in the second half after senior, Trent Olberding took over defensive duties on McAfee in the second half. Senior, Brendon Garrett added seven points on the night for the Bluejays, as well.

With the win Nemaha Valley improved to 4-0 on the season continuing to win this season, while Sabetha fell to 2-2 on the year with the loss.

Next up for Nemaha Valley they hit the road again on Friday to take on Perry Lecompton and for Sabetha they, too will be on the road at Santa Fe Trail on Friday.
