Wathena Renames Baseball Field in Honor of Long-Time Coaches

Over the weekend the legion baseball season continued for the Doniphan County senior legion and before the games Sunday long-time Doniphan coaches Vernie Coy and Lyle Smith had the field in Wathena named in their honor to the newly named Coy & Smith field.

Coy started coaches the Doniphan senior legion in 1999 and has a career coaching record of 438 wins to 295 losses, while Smith has 39 years of legion baseball experience with a career record of 881-503.

Smith started coaching legion baseball in 1980 in Hiawatha and came to Wathena in 2001.

Under the watch of Smith and Coy the Doniphan County seniors have finished second at the state tournament twice, third once and fourth once.

In the last four seasons DC has posted one of the best records throughout the state, compiling a record of 108-31 in that stretch.

The two of have led Doniphan County seniors 20 or more wins in each season since 2002 and on the season have a current record of 5-6 sitting in the third spot of the Northeast Kansas League.
