TVL Basketball Tournament Day 1 Recap

The 2013 Twin Valley League tournament got underway on Saturday and there was plenty of action on the hardwood at Frankfort where this years TVL tournament is being hosted. Saturday's action is recapped below.

Girls

#9 Axtell vs. #8 Hanover

In the 8 vs. 9 seed it was the eight seed coming out on top that being the Hanover Wildcats capturing a 44-29 win over the Axtell Eagles. It was tied early on 10-10 at the end for the first quarter, but behind a 13-5 second period and 10-3 third quarter the Wildcats took firm control of the game and went on win the game. Hanover was lead by Claire Bruna with 10 points, while Courtney Heinen lead Axtell in the loss with a game-high 15 points. With the win Hanover will face the #1 seeded Washington County squad on Monday at 3:15pm.

#12 Blue Valley-Randolph vs. #5 Wetmore

After a sluggish start to the game for both teams that featured a 16-10 halftime score, it was the Lady Cardinals of Wetmore who lead at the half using a 27-12 second half to secure a 43-23 win over Blue Valley to advance in the tourney bracket. Point guard, Alayna Noe lead the way for Wetmore with 15 points on the day with Jordan Evans chipping in 10 points. For the Rams they were lead by Brittany Pfaff and Monique Sandquist who each scored six apiece. Wetmore continues in the tournament to face the #4 seed Valley Heights Mustangs on Monday at 4:45pm (game will be on 92.1 KMZA and online -- click here to listen).

#11 Clifton-Clyde vs. #6 Linn

The Lady Bulldogs just played a steady game and lead a majority of the contest getting out to a 20-13 lead at the half and went on to secure the 44-25 win over Clifton-Clyde. Nicole Ohlde continues to lead Linn on the court as she tallied 15 points. For Clifton-Clyde it was Taylor Siefert and C. Charbonneau leading the way with six points each. Linn advances with the win to play the #3 seeded Frankfort Wildcats on Monday at 6:15pm.

#10 Centralia vs. #7 Onaga

It was a tight ballgame in the first half but the 10 seeded Panthers lead 27-21 of the 7 seeded Buffaloes at the the half. The second half was a different story as Centralia used a 22-4 second half to grasp a victory and continue on in the bracket portion of the TVL tournament. Sophomores tandem, Amaris Jones and Liz Hasenkamp each scored 12 points on the night, while junior, Kaitlyn Koch returned after missing a pair of games and scored 11 points. For Onaga they were lead by Raegan Hermreck who tallied 13 points, while hitting three three-pointers on the night. Boys

#9 Linn vs. #8 Frankfort (Frankfort 65-44 win) 

A quick start and a solid finish that's what helped propel the Frankfort Wildcats to a 65-44 win over Linn in the TVL tourney. With a 24-10 first quarter and 21-11 fourth period Frankfort earned the tournament win on their home court. On top of the big start and strong finish, it was a great day by senior, Calahan Brown who scored 31 of the 65 Frankfort points on the day. For Linn, Zach Willesden lead them in the loss with 16 points. Frankfort with the win will play the #1 seed Onaga Buffaloes on Monday at 3:15pm (game will be on 92.1 KMZA and online -- click here to listen).

#12 Wetmore vs. #5 Hanover (Hanover 69-54 win)

Wildcats wasted no time taking control of the game against the Cardinals of Wetmore starting off with a 23-9 first quarter to establish enough of a lead to go on to win the game 69-54. Hanover registered three players in double figures with Wade Steinfort leading the way with 17 points; Austin Diederich and Andrew Bruna added 16 and 10 points each. Wetmore in the loss was lead by Jeremy Hoelscher who tallied 13 points. Hanover advances with the win to face the #4 seed Valley Heights on Monday at 4:45pm.

#11 Clifton-Clyde vs. #6 Centralia (Centralia 51-37 win) 

Behind three players in double figures and a 17-7 fourth quarter to close the game out the Centralia Panthers earned a 51-37 win over Clifton-Clyde. The game was kept close for a bit with Clifton-Clyde making a pair of runs in the game, but ultimately the Panthers just proved to be to much. Devin Rempe lead Centralia with 15 points, while Sam Steinlage added 11 points and Cody Huerter chipped in 10 points. Alex Deaver and Caleb Gelino had 17 and 14 points each for Clifton-Clyde in the loss. Centralia moves on in the Tourney with the win to play Monday at 6:15pm against #3 seed Washington County (game will be on 92.1 KMZA and online -- click here to listen).

#10 Blue Valley-Randolph vs. #7 Axtell (Axtell 49-41 win)

Axtell Eagles established an early lead behind a 14-4 first quarter which they used to hold on for the 49-41, win against the Rams of Blue Valley. Payton Heinen lead the way with 18 points for Axtell, while Aaron Schmelzle chipped in 14 points. Blue Valley was lead by Levi Peter who scored 16 points in the loss. Axtell advances on to play the #2 seed B&B Falcons on Monday at 7:45pm.
