TVL Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals Recap

The 2013 Twin Valley League tournament continued on Monday with the Quarterfinals and there was plenty of great action on the hardwood at Frankfort. Monday's action is recapped below.

Girls

#8 Hanover vs. #1 Washington County (Washington County won 52-38)

Lady Tigers of Washington County continued to cruise in the season remaining unbeaten improving to 10-0 behind a 52-38 win over the Hanover Lady Wildcats, as the Tigers are looking to make it three straight TVL tournament titles. Washington County established a 32-12 lead at the half and cruised from that point, as Erin Alexander scored 18 points, Samantha L'Ecuyer chipped in 13 points and Megan Stegman added 12 points. In the loss Claire Bruna and Tiffany Bruna each tallied 10 points each on the night for Hanover in the loss. Washington County advances to the semifinals on Friday night at 6:00pm, while Hanover moves to the consolation bracket.

#5 Wetmore vs. # 4 Valley Heights (Valley Heights won 51-48)

It was a tight ball game between a pair of 6-2 teams as the Lady Mustangs of Valley Heights and Lady Cardinals of Wetmore faced off on the hardwood in the four vs. five matchup. Wetmore muscled their way to a two-point lead at the half 24-22, but Valley Heights came back with and answer in the third quarter to take the lead and hold on for the win, 51-48. Both teams had key players in foul trouble but both had 20 plus point performers, too. For Wetmore in the loss senior, Dana Kramer lead the way with 20 points, while Freshman, Brandi Roepke lead the Mustangs with 22 points. Valley Heights advance to the semifinals to take on the #1 seed Washington County Friday at 6:00pm, while Wetmore will play Hanover in the consolation bracket.

#6 Linn vs. #3 Frankfort (Frankfort won 51-39)

Lady Wildcats of Frankfort took control of this contest against the Lady Bulldogs of Linn behind an 18-9 second quarter and were paced by Jessa Jones who tallied 22 points and Josie Hale who added 17 points for the Wildcats in the win, 51-39. Bulldogs in the loss had a pair of players registered double figures with Nicole Ohlde scoring 15 points and Kesiah Thalmann adding 13 points. Frankfort advances to the semifinals of the TVL tournament with the win while Linn falls to the consolation bracket.

#10 Centralia vs. #2 Baileyville-B&B (B&B won 41-40 in OT)

This game was perhaps the best of the tournament thus far as the night cap needed an extra stanza to decide the winner. After being tied at 29-29 at the end of regulation B&B held a three point lead with time rattling of the clock and sophomore, Amaris Jones banked a three-pointer in for Centralia to tie the game at 40-40 but then Centralia was whistled for the foul with a few seconds left and junior, Ashley Kramer made one free throw to secure a 41-40 overtime win for B&B Lady Falcons. On the night, Kramer finished with nine points, seven of which was on free throws, including the game winner. While her teammate, Laura Sudbeck was the only Falcon to score double digits with 10 points and Jones for Centralia scored a game-high 11 points. With the win B&B made it chalk (1-2-3-4 seeds) advancing to the semifinals on Friday night as the Falcons will face Frankfort at 7:30pm, while Centralia moves to the consolation bracket.

Boys

#8 Frankfort vs. #1 Onaga (Frankfort won 50-30) 

For the second straight year Onaga and Frankfort meet up against each other in the TVL tournament as the number one and eight seeds and for the second straight year it was the Frankfort Wildcats prevailing in the contest this time 50-30. Wildcats who started off fast against Linn in the opening round of the TVL tournament did the same in this one against the Buffaloes as Frankfort established a 23-8 lead at the half and Onaga was never able to recover. Calahan Brown lead the Wildcats again this season with a game-high 16 points while Brett Kenworthy added 13 points and Lucas Adams posted 12 points. For Onaga in the loss sophomore, Jarod Gronewoller lead the way with 10 points in the loss. Frankfort with the win made it tourney semifinals for the second straight year and will play on Thursday at 6:00pm.

#5 Hanover vs. #4 Valley Heights (Valley Heights won 60-49)

Mustangs pushed out to a nine-point lead at the half 32-23 and didn't look back from that mark. Junior big man, Charles Musil lead the way with 21 points with senior, Tanner Trimble and junior, Bennett Bargdill adding 12 and nine points, respectively. For Hanover in the loss Hunter Nicholson lead the way with 14 points on the evening. With the win Valley Heights advances to Thursday's semifinals to face off against the eight seeded Frankfort Wildcats at 6:00pm, while Hanover falls into the consolation bracket.

#6 Centralia vs. #3 Washington County (Centralia won 53-38) 

Close at the start but then it would be the sixth seeded Centralia Panthers taking firm control of the ball game behind a 21-12 third quarter of action against Washington County. Behind that third quarter of action Centralia went on to register the 53-38 win. Juniors, Sam Steinlage and Brett Burdiek lead the way for the Panthers with 22 and 16 points on the night. The Tigers had eight players score in the game and were lead by TJ Miller and Kyle McGatlin who each tallied nine points. Centralia advances with the win to the semifinals in the TVL tournament, while Washington County falls into the consolation bracket.

#7 Axtell vs. #2 Baileyville-B&B (Axtell won 39-33)

It was the third time this season these two teams in Axtell and B&B meet up against each other and after splitting the first two it was a tight ball game but the seventh seeded Eagles earned the 39-33 victory over B&B. Three Eagles in double figures helped lead the Eagles to the win with Aaron Schmelzle leading the way with 14 points, Payton Heinen adding 11 points and Taylor Platt posting 10 points. For the Falcons Dustin Rottinghaus lead the way in the loss with 11 points. With the win Axtell moves on to the TVL semifinals to take on Centralia at 7:30pm on Thursday night, with B&B moving to the consolation bracket.
