Centralia Sweeps TVL Tournament Titles in Frankfort
By Brandon Tadtman

It was a Centralia Panthers sweep on Saturday night in Frankfort as both the girls and boys won the Twin Valley League Tournament Championships.

Girls: (1) Centralia 42, (2) Valley Heights 40

These two teams both entered the Championship game on Saturday night undefeated and top three in their respective classifications.

Centralia #3 in 1A-I while Valley Heights was ranked second in Class 2A. The ballgame lived up to the expectations and then some.

Valley Heights took the first quarter advantage at 12-11 but Centralia posted a 14-6 second quarter to take a 25-18 halftime lead.

The Mustangs responded with a 12-6 run of their own in the third quarter and we had a one point game going into the fourth quarter.

The game was back and forth in the final few minutes with multiple lead changes. Valley Heights led 40-39 with under 30 seconds with the Panthers inbounding underneath their own basket. The ball got inside and was kicked out to the right wing where Lena Haverkamp splashed a deep three with 14 seconds left to give Centralia the lead.

Valley Heights had a couple of shots at the end that didn't fall and the Panthers walked away tournament champs winning an absolute thriller.

Avery and Oen Deters led the Panthers each with 14 points while Haverkamp finished with nine including the game winning three. Mustangs were led by Emma Yungeberg with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Panthers now 10-0 while the Mustangs drop their first and sit at 11-1.

Boys: (2) Centralia 57, (1) Hanover 50

The Hanover Wildcats had not lost a game since December of 2020 and that was to the Centralia Panthers.

The defending State Champs had won 31 straight games going into the TVL title game on Saturday night and the Panthers were able to do it again.

This time it was for some midseason hardware.

This game was tight from the jump as it was 13-13 after one quarter while Hanover took the advantage at halftime, 24-21.

Panthers offense picked it up in the third quarter and outscored Hanover 20-15 to take a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Centralia early on in the fourth slowly kept building up the lead but Hanover wouldn't go away quietly. However, time simply became a factor and the Panthers were able to hold it off for the win.

Balanced scoring for Centralia led by Trenton Talley with 14 points. Presly Bowers finished with a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds while Colton Weyer added 11.

Hanover was led in scoring by Keagan Dimler and Josh Zarybnicky each with 13 while Philip Doebele added 12.

Centralia with the win improved to 8-2 while Hanover drops their first in a while and sit at 10-1.
