Onaga Girls Win Drama Free, Wetmore Boys Squeeze By in Double Overtime

Wetmore and Onaga split their two games on Tuesday night with the Buffaloes winning the girls’ game 54-11 and the Cardinals winning the boys’ game in double overtime 50-46.

Onaga was able to completely shut down the Wetmore offense in the first quarter and scored well themselves leading 16-0 after the first quarter.

The Buffaloes kept them without any field goal makes in the first half as all five Wetmore points in the first half were from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Onaga continued to play solid half-court offense and dominated the boards which led to a good amount of second chance points.

In the second half, Onaga was able to take it easy and play some of their bench players to give their starters a rest as they cruised to a blowout victory.

Freshman forward Emmarsyn Fordham came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 15 points including seven in the first quarter and eight in the third quarter. She is our “Player to Bank On” presented by Farmers State Bank.

Freshman guard Jadyn Haskin had 12 points as well in the victory.

In the boys’ game, Onaga got out to a good start making three three-pointers in the first quarter to go up 11-6. However, Wetmore would go on a 14-4 run to start the second quarter and lead 20-19 at the half.

It was back-and-forth in the third quarter with Wetmore guard Brayden McQueen making a pair of threes helping them hold on to a four-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Onaga had opportunities to make game-winning shots in the fourth quarter and first overtime, but were unable to get good looks.

In double overtime, Wetmore jumped out to a quick lead and was able to hang on with some clutch free throws from senior guard Kyler Wommack to secure the win.

Wommack had 14 points and forced some crucial turnovers making him the “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Senior forward Jacob Carls also had 14 points for Wetmore. Senior guard Dierk Hanzlicek also had ten points in the win.

Onaga sophomore guard Jackson Kolterman led them in scoring with 13 points with junior guard Konnor Nider also scoring ten.
