Doniphan West and Centralia advanced to the championship game of the Onaga Sub-State tournament on Thursday night.

The 2-seeded Mustangs defeated the 6-seed Troy handily by a final score of 43-19. The 4-seeded Panthers got the upset over top-seeded Burlingame by a final score of 36-23.

Troy took an early 4-0 lead against Doniphan West with the Mustangs playing a little sloppy in the opening minute. However, they would start pressing and forcing the Trojans into some turnovers and making transition layups. Doniphan West put together a 21-0 run spanning to the end of the second quarter and had a 25-11 lead at the half.

D-West would only give up eight points to Troy in the second half to win the game by a comfortable margin.

Mustang sophomore guard Brennah Edie led the team in points with 12 making her the “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Edie had eight points in the third quarter.

Senior guard Kyra Johnson also had ten points for D-West in the win.

Troy freshman point guard Harper Whetstine was the only Trojan to make multiple field goals. She finished with 12 points in the loss.

In the final game of the night, the first three quarters were very low scoring. This was more attributed to the great defense from both teams.

Centralia started with a 7-5 lead after the first quarter with freshman Cora Thompson scoring four points.

For Burlingame, their offense struggled all night long apart from their junior guard Kaylin Noonan. Noonan had nine points in the first half as Centralia took a 16-12 lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the basketball touched the nylon just five times combined. Centralia would make one field goal and two free throws, and Burlingame made a three pointer and that was it.

In the fourth quarter, the offense ramped up for the Panthers with sophomore guard Oen Deters scoring eight points including four big free throws. Senior guard Lena Haverkamp added four points in the final frame as well.

More importantly, Noonan fouled out of the game with 1:45 left and apart from her, the Bearcats had no juice. She scored all eight points in the fourth quarter for Burlingame. With her out, Centralia was able to pull away.

Deters finished with 16 points and is the “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Haverkamp ended up with 11 points as well in the victory.

Noonan scored 17 of the team’s 23 total points for Burlingame.

Centralia and Doniphan West will collide on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the Class 1A-D1 state tournament in Dodge City.
