The Atchison boys basketball team is headed back to the Class 4A State Tournament in Salina. The Phoenix held off Hayden on Friday night 46-43 to win the Sub-State Championship.
Atchison (19-3) was the top-seed in the East bracket of Class 4A. They opened Sub-State with a big win over Coffeyville earlier in the week before beating Hayden on Friday night.
Atchison's only losses this season were against 5A #1 Highland Park twice and also against KC Washington late in the season.
Hugoton will be the top-seed at the State Tournament next week with a record of 20-2. Atchison's 19-3 mark is second best and is tied with McPherson so they will land either the 2-seed or 3-seed in the field.
The other teams include Baldwin (18-4), Eudora (18-4), Bishop Miege (16-6), Wellington (15-7), and Clay Center (9-13).
The Tournament will run March 8-11 at the Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina. We'll have coverage of the Phoenix throughout the tournament on KAIR 93.7 FM.
