Doniphan West Girls Survive, Talley Buzzer-Beater Gets Centralia Boys to State

A pair of Twin Valley League teams win the Onaga Class 1A-D1 Sub-State tournaments with the Doniphan West girls defeating Centralia 44-39 and the Centralia boys defeating Burlingame 46-45 with a buzzer-beater.

In the girls’ game, Doniphan West started strong with senior guards Kyra Johnson and Claire Cole combining for 14 of the team’s 16 first quarter points. Centralia got seven points from their best player sophomore guard Oen Deters.

The Panthers’ offense struggled in the second quarter with just six points while D-West’s sophomore guard Brennah Edie scoring five points in the period as the Mustangs carried a 26-16 lead into halftime.

Centralia senior guard Lena Haverkamp scored six points in the third quarter, but the Mustangs were able to keep up and keep a ten-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Panthers were able to trim the deficit down to three at one point with three three-pointers from Deters, Tori Kuckelman and Jayden Wells.

Both teams dealt with foul trouble with Edie and Melaina Whetstine fouling out for Doniphan West and Deters and Tatum Kramer fouling out for Centralia.

Doniphan West made just one field goal in the quarter, but they got some clutch free throws from Johnson and Cole to hold on for the win to advance to state.

Cole finished with 14 points making her the “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Johnson also finished with nine points.

Deters led Centralia with 15 points in the loss.

In the boys’ game, Centralia got out to an 8-0 lead with a couple of three-pointers from senior guard Trenton Talley.

Burlingame was able to respond with three threes from senior shooting guard Roman Bayless. He had all nine of the team’s first quarter points as Centralia led 11-9 after the first eight minutes.

Brock Kramer took the game over in the second quarter for the Panthers scoring eight points to help them go up 24-19 at the half.

Senior forward Brock Reinecke took advantage of a matchup in the paint and made a pair of field goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth quarter.

Burlingame was able to lead for most of the fourth quarter with three more three-pointers from Bayless. The Bearcats missed some free throws in the final minute which gave Centralia to win the game down by one with 3.2 seconds left.

Talley made an eight-foot jumper from the short corner as the buzzer sounded to win the game and advance to the state tournament.

It was Talley’s first made basket since his three-point makes early in the first quarter.

He finished with eight points in the game and Reinecke scored 12 points. They both deserve the title of “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Kramer finished with 11 points as well.
