This past week started and ended with victories, but only losses were in the middle. Fortunately, though, the Royals only played five games over the past seven days for a record of 2-3.

Their first game of the week was a Monday 7-0 shutout at the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite the solid offensive performance, Kansas City probably could have gotten even more runs considering they racked up 16 hits.

The game wasn’t hopeless for St. Louis until Bobby Witt Jr. hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to go up 5-0. Michael Massey then hit another two-run home run for good measure.

It was a bullpen day for the pitching staff, and it was Mike Mayers who carried the heaviest load. He went six full innings and gave up only two hits (that was all the Cardinals got all on Monday), no walks and, obviously, no earned runs.

Sadly, they were unable to secure their first series win in two weeks as they lost on Tuesday 2-1 to even the two-game I-70 series.

Scoring didn’t start until Nolan Arenado placed an RBI double into left field in the bottom of the sixth.

Two innings later and the Cards added onto their lead with Nolan Gorman getting an RBI sacrifice flyout bringing home Tommy Edman.

Kansas City tried to get a rally going in the top of the ninth and they got a run on an RBI groundout by Witt Jr. However, Gallegos was able to hold on and pick up the save for St. Louis.

Cardinals’ starting pitcher Miles Mikolas had a career-defining performance giving up no runs, one walk and three hits while striking out ten batters in the win.

After two days of rest, the Royals were back home to face the Colorado Rockies this past weekend. The series started with a 7-2 loss on Friday.

Kansas City was in good shape after seven innings with a 2-1 lead with Edward Olivares and Drew Waters both hitting solo shots early in the game and the pitching staff taking care of business.

That was until Colorado put up a six-spot in the top of the eighth inning. It began with a play at the plate with Brenton Doyle scoring from third on a routine ground ball with runners on second and third and one out. Royals second baseman Nicky Lopez was unable to fan the speedy Doyle which tied the game 2-2.

Ryan McMahon then got an RBI single to take the lead and Elias Diaz drove in two more runs to go up 5-2. Another two-RBI base hit from Nolan Jones added insult to injury.

Hernandez picked up his third loss for KC and his second blown save of the season. He gave up four runs in just a third of an inning.

The Royals lost their third game in a row on Saturday with a 6-4 final score.

Kansas City was out of this one from the get-go as they surrendered five runs in the top of the first. They would slowly try to crawl back in it, but the hole they dug was too deep.

Salvador Perez continued playing at an All-Star level with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to get their deficit down to two runs, but they couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Royals finished their weekend on a high note to avoid the sweep winning on Sunday 2-0.

Massey broke the seal in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single that brought MJ Melendez home. Maikel Garcia got his first career home run in the bottom of the eighth inning which bounced on the fence in right-center before finding the hands of a fan. The play was reviewed, and the call of a homer stood to give KC the 2-0 lead.

Brady Singer has had a rough go in 2023, but he was an out away from a quality start as he pitched 5.2 innings giving up just five hits and no walks with seven strikeouts. The bullpen combined for 2.1 innings with just three hits allowed, no walks and seven more strikeouts.

Kansas City starts a six-game road trip with a three-game series against the Miami Marlins, who are right in the thick of the Wild Card hunt in the National League and arm in arms-length of the NL East-leading Atlanta.

They follow that up with another series against the Baltimore Orioles this upcoming weekend. Kansas City lost two out of three at home against the O’s on May 2-4.
