The Hiawatha Post 66 Braves run-ruled Doniphan County Post 55 in six innings on Thursday afternoon by a final score of 9-1.
After a solid first two innings of pitching from both starters, the Braves broke the seal in the bottom of the third inning. They scored their first run on an error followed by an RBI double by extra hitter Xavier Oldham and an RBI groundout from shortstop Joel Bryan to go up 3-0.
Doniphan County responded with a run in the top of the fifth via an infield error, but Hiawatha was able to get four more runs in the fifth inning.
Oldham got another RBI double, and first baseman Cooper Jacobsen brought two more runs in with his double. Pinch hitter Cooper Wischropp got an RBI single two at-bats later.
The Braves were then able to put away the game with a bases loaded walk with Jacobsen at the plate and an RBI single from third baseman Kaden Smith.
Left fielder Brandt Barnhill went 2-for-3 with a run and a steal. Oldham ended his day going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Center fielder Carson Gilbert also had a great day at the plate with a pair of singles and a pair of runs.
Doniphan County’s second baseman Ryder Davis had a good day at the plate going 2-for-3 with both hits being singles. Third baseman Dustin Veach had a double in the fourth inning and represented the team’s lone run.
Their starting pitcher Austin Grable had a solid performance. In his 4.1 innings pitched, he gave up just three earned runs, three walks and four hits.
Perhaps the most impressive performance from Thursday’s victory for Hiawatha was from starting pitcher Ashton Rockey.
He went the full six innings and gave up just five hits, no walks and no earned runs while striking out seven and getting the win. He also added two steals and had three runs.
Rockey is our Player of the Game brought to you by McDonalds of Hiawatha and Seneca.
