The Royals began their six-game east coast road trip on the wrong foot after getting swept by the Miami Marlins.
After a rough relief outing by Carlos Hernandez last week, he got the start on Monday, and he pitched two solid innings giving up no hits, no runs, no walks and struck out three batters.
However, Mike Mayers, who was the hero in last Monday’s win at St. Louis going six innings in an incredible relief effort and earning the win, really struggled in his three innings. He gave up nine hits and seven runs in the series opener.
Meanwhile, the offense got off to a good start scoring the first four runs of the ballgame. MJ Melendez and Salvador Perez had RBI hits in the first. Melendez got another one in the third which was after Nick Pratto hit a solo home run.
Luis Arraez’s pursuit of a .400 season batting average was amplified by a solid mid-week series, and he went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the victory for the Fish.
Kansas City ended up losing on Monday 9-6.
Tuesday’s 6-1 loss was yet another instance of Zack Greinke pitching relatively well but getting absolutely no run support.
Every single Royals hitter that came to the plate on Tuesday struck out at least once.
Greinke cruised through the first four innings, but the outing was then blown up with Miami scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Arraez drove in another run during his 2-for-4 performance. He also scored two runs.
There has been a lot of buzz in the baseball world about Cincinnati Reds infield prospect Elly De La Cruz who came up to the majors this week, but it was his brother Bryan that was the hero of the day for the Marlins.
Bryan De La Cruz hit a bases-clearing three-RBI double in the fifth inning to blow the game wide open.
Wednesday’s game resulted in the same result as Tuesday, another 6-1 defeat.
Jordan Lyles continues to take weekly beatings as his record has now worsened to 0-10 in 13 starts this season with a 6.84 ERA.
Whenever he’s on the mound, it’s essentially a throw-away game and Wednesday was no exception. The sacrificial lamb went seven innings and allowed five runs and six hits, including two more from Arraez and a two-run home run Jesus Sanchez.
Kansas City’s record has now fallen to an abysmal 18-44 and they are now tasked with finishing their road trip against a Baltimore Orioles (38-24) team that’s in the hunt for the AL East crown.
Baltimore is going to be playing angry after losing two out of three in Milwaukee to a white-hot Brewers team.
The Royals already faced the O’s on May 2-4 in which they lost two of three at home.
Their mid-week series next week will be back at home as they’ll host a rejuvenated Cincinnati Reds (29-34) franchise that is filled with youth and optimism.
The Redlegs took two out of three games at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers with both wins coming in comeback walk-off fashion. That series will run from Monday, June 12th through Wednesday, June 14th.
All Royals game can be listened to on 92.1 FM KMZA.
