Royals Review: Losing Streak Snapped at Ten Games, Pasquantino Done for the Year

This past week saw the Royals have multiple opportunities to secure home victories against the Reds and the Angels, but they were only able to come up with one win. They entered their midweek series with the Cincinnati Reds with a six-game losing streak.

They also received some awful news that Vinnie Pasquantino is done for the 2023 season. He needs surgery to repair a fully torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Their series opener on Monday night was Chiefs night…which meant that fans would be wearing red…against the Reds. Seems like foolish planning on the event management, but maybe that’s just me.

The Reds’ pitching staff has been shaky this season and Kansas City took advantage scoring the games’ first three runs.

Cincinnati answered with a solo shot by Fairchild in the third inning, and they were able to tie it up in the sixth inning with TJ Friedl, who made his debut since being put on the I.L., hit an RBI double and Jonathan India got an RBI single in the sixth.

In the top of the ninth, Newman brought home the go-ahead run with a sac-fly to left giving the Reds a 4-3 lead. However, Royals captain Salvador Perez would go deep on an 0-1 hanging changeup to tie the game and send it to extras.

The Reds would retake the lead after India grounded it to Garcia, but his throw was dropped by Salvy which allowed Friedl to score.

With Eaton and Witt Jr. stealing third and second base with just one out in the bottom of the ninth, it was looking good for the Royals. However, Olivares would pop out to third base and Garcia would fly out to left field ending the wild game with a final score of 5-4. That put their losing streak at seven games.

Just like Monday, Kansas City would score in the opening inning on Tuesday.

Cincinnati would respond with all their runs being scored in the second inning with five total Redlegs touching home plate.

Kansas City would slowly chip away at that four-run deficit getting a run back in the second with an RBI double from Duffy, and a two-run home run from Witt Jr. in the third inning to make it 5-4.

The Royals had a prime opportunity in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out, but Pratto and Perez would strikeout. It was another 5-4 loss to the Reds extending their losing streak to eight games.

The Reds didn’t get many hits on Wednesday, but they made noise when they put it in play. Rookie first baseman Spencer Steer hit a moonshot to left to give Cincy a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Royals got hits in bunches in the series finale including an RBI single from Witt Jr. to tie the game in the third.

Cincinnati would get a 7-1 lead after a five-run fifth inning, including a home run from Fairchild and back-to-back homers from McLain and India.

Kansas City would remain competitive getting their deficit back down to just three. They even had a chance to win the game with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but Reds’ closer Alexis Diaz shut the door securing another sweep.

The Royals had 15 total hits and left 14 runners on base. They had lost nine games in a row.

Kansas City had a chance to snap their streak with a new series against a Los Angeles Angels team that is notorious for underperforming.

However, it was the Royals, once again, that would underperform as they were only able to put up four hits all game.

It wasn’t a great day for the Angels’ offense either, but they had enough for a 3-0 win. That would be their 10th consecutive time being on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

However, the streak would finally end on Saturday with a comeback 10-9 win in the tenth inning.

The Royals would trail as much as 8-2 in the seventh inning after Shohei Ohtani hit his American League-leading 23rd home run.

However, Witt Jr. would crank a two-RBI double to left to get KC within three. After an RBI single from Pratto in the eighth, Witt Jr. would bring home two more runs with a single to tie the game 8-8.

Mike Trout would give the Angels the lead back with an RBI single in the top of the inning, but Garcia tied the game with an RBI base hit and with one out, Taylor would bring the game-winning run home on a single to end the streak.

It took every ounce of physical and emotional energy to get the win on Saturday and the Royals fell flat on Sunday with a 5-2 series finale defeat.

Greinke pitched well in the loss, but once again he wasn’t getting any run support.

Ohtani went deep again in the fourth inning and Trout immediately hit another one out for back-to-back jacks in the fifth inning.

Kansas City hit the 50-loss mark this past week as they now sit at 19 wins and a whopping 52 losses. Things can’t get worse from here.

They’ll keep playing baseball games, though, with a seven-game road trip starting in Detroit from Monday through Wednesday. They then take the trip down the Sunshine State to take on the Tampa Bay Rays, who have the best record in baseball by far.
