Hiawatha and Corning Land Wins in Zone Tournament on Wednesday

Hiawatha and Corning picked up wins on Wednesday night to advance in the Legion AA Zone 4 baseball tournament in Seneca. 

Seneca 2 vs. Hiawatha 6

Hiawatha used a great pitching performance and provided offense in the middle innings to secure the win over Seneca. 

Cooper Jacobson pitched six strong innings for Hiawatha allowing one run, four hits with five strikeouts. 

The offense scored one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one more in the seventh. Hiawatha got RBI hits from Jacobson, Ashton Rockey, Matt Monaghan, and Xavier Oldham. 

Rockey had three hits in the game including a double. Jacobson was named the KNZA McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game. 

Seneca was held to five hits in the game but got a solo home run from Jonah Deters in the sixth and then Jaden Thomas scored on a wild pitch in the seventh. 

Doniphan County 0 vs. Corning 18 (5 innings) 

Corning wasted little time in the late game scoring five runs in the first on their way to a big win over Doniphan County. 

They scored four in the second and added nine in the third and finished the game with 14 hits. 

Drew Gibbs and Trenton Talley combined to pitch five innings allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts. Gibbs reached base four times and scored four runs while Talley had two hits and an RBI. 

J.T. Ross was named the KNZA McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game as he reached base four times with three hits and three runs scored. He drove in four runs including a three RBI double in the third. 

Hiawatha and Corning will play Thursday night at 8:00 PM with the winner advancing to the State Tournament in Concordia next week. 

Sabetha and Seneca will play the first game at 6:00 in a elimination game. Both games will be broadcast live on KNZA 103.9 FM.
