The Corning legion baseball team advanced to the State Tournament next week in Concordia with a 6-2 win over Hiawatha on Thursday night in Seneca.
Corning scored five runs in the first three innings and never looked back. Four of the six runs for Corning were unearned as Hiawatha's defense had five errors in the first three innings.
Zac Fisher showed why he was a 2-1A All-State pitcher this past season for Onaga. He pitched six innings allowing two runs with 11 strikeouts.
"He's one of the best competitors i've been around," said Corning head coach Travis Haverkamp after the game regarding Fisher.
Fisher also reached base four times with two singles and two runs scored and was named the KNZA McDonald's of Hiawatha and Seneca player of the game.
Drew Gibbs provided two doubles and two RBI's while Miles Wimberly reached base twice and scored two runs.
Hiawatha had multiple opportunites throughout the game as they left nine runners on base. There runs were scored off a sac fly by Kaden Smith in the fourth and on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Ashton Rockey led the Hiawatha offense as he reached base three times including a double and a run scored.
Corning heads to Concordia next week with plenty of momentum as they have won 11 of their last 12 games overall.
There is still one spot for the state tournament up for grabs on Friday night in Seneca. Seneca will face Doniphan County at 6:00 PM with the winner facing Hiawatha at 8:00 PM. The winner of that second game will be the other state qualifier out of Zone 4.
Games will be broadcast live on KNZA 103.9 FM.
