Last year's Shrine Bowl ended in a tie. The 2023 game, which was the 50th, was an absolute thriller on Saturday in Hays with the West beating the East 21-20.

The West led 7-0 after one quarter on a short touchdown run from Salina Central's Kenyon McMillan. The West built the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter on a touchdown reception by Circle's Ty Smith.

St. Marys quarterback Keller Hurla got the East on the board before halftime with a touchdown pass to Malik O'Atis of Shawnee Mission Northwest to make it 14-6.

The only touchdown in the third quarter was late in the frame after an interception and a short field. Manhattan quarterback Keenan Schartz gave the West a 21-6 lead with a short touchdown run.

Axtell's Isaac Detweiler and Troy's Jerrit Norris capped off a long touchdown drive for the East in the fourth quarter with a two-point conversion connection to make the score 21-14.

Norris was the leading receiver for the East as he finished the game with 41 yards on three catches. Norris also had the longest reception in the game of 30 yards.

The East scored one more time with over five minutes left in the game but failed on the two-point conversion and the score of 21-20 held up the rest of the way.

Atchison's Jesse Greenly provided some offense for the East as he finished the game with 29 rushing yards on six carries and added one reception for 13 yards.

The East haven't won the Shrine Bowl in five years after last year's 10-10 tie ended at the time a three-game losing streak.
