The Royals are continuously on trend for the worst season in franchise history. They lost six of their last seven games this past week.
This past Monday, they were defeated by the Detroit Tigers at home 3-2 in comeback fashion.
Kansas City got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth with RBI hits from Freddy Fremin and Nick Pratto to go up 2-0. Unfortunately, everything would fall apart in the top of the eighth with the Tigers getting a walk with the bases loaded and the game-winning two-RBI double provided from Matt Vierling.
Tuesday’s win was one of the wildest games of the season with a final score of 11-10.
After starting out with a 7-2 lead through four innings, the Tigers got back in the game with four runs in the next two innings.
The Royals decided their offense wasn’t done with Maikel Garcia hitting a two-RBI double in the sixth to go up 9-6. Dairon Blanco added another RBI double in the eighth and Garcia came through again with an RBI single to go back up five runs.
All the Royals had to do was not give up five or more runs in the top of the ninth, and they didn’t. However, they did make things interesting with four runs coming home and loading the bases with two outs. The win would guarantee that they wouldn’t be swept.
After that crazy marathon, their offense would only be able to produce five hits and two runs in their 3-2 Wednesday loss.
The Royals would take a 2-1 lead after Michael Massey and Kyle Isbel hit RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The next half inning, Kerry Carpenter tied the game 2-2 with an RBI single. Then, 12-time All-Star, two-time AL MVP, seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner, four-time AL batting champion and AL Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera provided the knockout blow with the go-ahead RBI single.
Kansas City had runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth, but failed to bring anyone across and dropped the third game of the series.
Trying to even up the series on Thursday, the Royals would have to face All-Star Michael Lorenzen, and he proved why he deserved to play in the mid-summer classic in Seattle.
The right-hander was dominant in seven innings, only giving up three hits, one walk and no runs with three strikeouts en route to a 3-0 series finale victory for Detroit.
The Royals had a chance to pick up some wins against an ice-cold New York Yankees team that hadn’t won a series since June coming into this past weekend.
However, they would drop their third game in a row on Friday with a 5-4 loss in their series opener.
All nine runs from both teams came on the long ball with Massey hitting a three-run shot in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Bill McKinney took the lead right back a half inning later to go up 4-3. After Gleyber Torres went deep for a solo home run in the fifth, Massey hit his second deep shot of the day in the eighth to get them back within a run, but that would be it for Kansas City’s offense.
It was an early Saturday game for the Royals, and they proved to be a little tired with the offense once again falling flat in a 5-2 loss.
It was a go-ahead solo home run by DJ LaMahieu in the bottom of the seventh that put the Yanks ahead with Giancarlo Stanton hitting a two-run homer in the eighth to keep Kansas City out of reach.
Grady Singer looked pretty good in his six-inning outing with only two runs, one walk and five hits allowed and a solid nine strikeouts. However, American League All-Star starting pitcher Gerrit Cole was slightly better as he mirrored Singer’s run, hit and walk totals, but he struck out ten batters in 6.1 innings.
The Bronx Bombers went wire-to-wire in their 8-5 series finale to secure a sweep of the Royals with four runs in the first inning.
Kansas City got back within two in the sixth inning, but New York responded with three more runs in the eighth inning to put the Royals out of reach, despite the Royals getting two runs in the ninth.
Things continue to go from bad to worse for the Royals in what has been a disastrous first season for Matt Quatraro’s team.
They are now 28-73 through 101 games in the 2023 MLB season. Up next is a date with the Cleveland Guardians at “The Jacob” for three games on Monday through Wednesday.
The Royals will get a day off on Thursday and then have a date at home with the red-hot Minnesota Twins, who are trying to pull away from Cleveland in the AL Central race.
I wish I had some words of optimism or encouragement at this point, but I just don’t, sadly. There isn’t really anything to look forward to with this team right now.
Bobby Witt Jr. has been a bust so far in his career, Salvador Perez has been for the past month and unless they get some stud prospects at the deadline come August 1st, Kansas City fans will just have to wait till the Chiefs get their season started to watch some winning professional sports.
