The Associated Press has released its Preseason Top 25 just 12 days away from the college football season.
Reigning Big 12 Champions Kansas State are one spot higher in the AP Poll than the Coaches Poll that was released last week as they come in at #16. That ranking is the highest the Wildcats have been ranked in an AP Preseason Poll since 2004. One writer from the University of Virginia having the Cats as high as #10, and two writers completely left K-State off their ballots.
The Wildcats are the second-highest ranked Big 12 team only behind the Texas Longhorns, who have not won the Big 12 in 5,000 days (shoutout to @DaysSinceTexas on X or Twitter or whatever you want to call it for having a daily count).
TCU is #17 in the AP Preseason Poll with the Horned Frogs and K-State flip-flopped for both polls.
Oklahoma rounds out Big 12 members that are in the rankings at #20 with Texas Tech just barely missing out. The Red Raiders have the most receiving votes among teams not in the poll. Joey McGuire enters his second season as head coach pre-ranked #24 in the preseason Coaches Poll.
KU got no love from the writers as they didn't receive a single vote. When the poll was released, KU had ten votes, but they were mistakenly given to the Jayhawks when they should have been given to K-State.
Baylor is not quite as highly favored by the AP as they get just three votes compared to their 28 in the Coaches.
Oklahoma State, Houston, BYU all got votes in the Coaches Poll, but received none in the AP Poll.
As for 2024 Big 12 Conference member Utah, they are ranked #14, the same ranking they got in the Coaches Poll.
Looking at K-State’s non-conference opponents, Troy received 14 votes after a 12-win season and a Sun Belt Conference title. Missouri didn’t receive any votes in the AP poll but got 11 in the Coaches Poll. Southeast Missouri State is also ranked #11 in the FCS Coaches Poll.
As for KU’s non-con opponents, Illinois received three votes in the AP Poll and Nevada didn’t receive any. Missouri State also didn’t get any receiving votes in the FCS poll.
