In their final DVL meeting, the Doniphan West girls and Horton boys prevailed in a high school basketball double-header on Friday night in Horton.
GIRLS: D-West 27, Horton 23
This was a turnover fest and low scoring affair with both teams struggling to take care of the basketball and score. The game was tied 3-3 after one quarter and the Lady Mustangs never trailed again, taking an 11-8 lead into the locker room. Horton tied the game at 14 early in the third frame but was plagued by 27 turnovers on the night.
D-West committed 20 turnovers themselves but made the only two three-point-shots early in the fourth quarter and held on for the win as Kassidy Blevins hit a trio of free-throws in the final 40 seconds. Abbi Ellis and McKenzie Blevins each scored 6 points for the Mustangs who are now 8-2 in the DVL and 12-5 overall with a third straight win. Horton fell to 8-4 in league play and 10-8 overall with their first loss in four games. Sarah Coversup had a game-high 7 points for the Chargers.
BOYS: Horton 66, D-West 55
The winless Mustangs came out strong with five three-point baskets in the first quarter and went on to commit only 14 turnovers and make 9 of 14 free throws while scoring a season-high 55 points. However, it wasn't enough as Horton also played well and won their third consecutive game. The Chargers took their first lead 19-17 to end the first quarter and was up 37-33 at halftime. It was the inside game that D-West had no answer for as Brent Mathias had 13 points and Trey Dishon posted 24 for the Chargers who improved to 9-9 overall and 8-4 in the DVL. Derek Gibson scored 15 for Doniphan West while Luke Rush had 12 including 3 of the Mustangs 8 triples on the night before falling to 0-16 on the season.
