It was the Jefferson County North girls and Horton boys picking up Friday night wins in an NEKL showdown at Horton.

Girls: JCN 53, Horton 16

The Jefferson County North girls opened up a 16-8 first quarter lead and never looked back on their way to a running clock in the fourth quarter.

They would outscore Horton 18-4 in the second quarter and 13-1 in the third quarter.

The senior trio of Clara Johnson, Abby Laird, and Emily Langley led the way for JCN as they improved to 2-1 on the season.

Johnson finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, Langley finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Laird finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

Horton (1-2) was led by freshman Marlysa Banks with seven points and four rebounds.

Boys: JCN 38, Horton 45

The boys contest was tight from the jump with multiple ties and lead changes throughout the course of the game.

The teams combined for 31 first quarter points but the defenses were the story for the remainder of the game.

Horton led 18-13 after the first quarter and 26-24 at halftime. JCN outscored Horton 9-7 in the third quarter and the game was tied at 33 going into the fourth quarter.

JCN's Calvin Manville hit a 35-foot three pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter.

JCN would struggle offensively in the fourth quarter as they went on an over seven-minute scoring drought and failed to score until the final 35 seconds left in the game.

Horton would make enough plays and free throws down the stretch to pull away for the win. Horton stays undefeated moving to 3-0 while JCN dropped to 0-2.

Horton got 13 points each from Luke McAfee and Gannon Becker while Manville for JCN led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Up next for both, Horton will travel to Pleasant Ridge on Tuesday while JCN will play at Troy next Thursday.
