Valley Heights Girls Remain Perfect, Frankfort Boys Win League Opener

The Valley Heights girls and Frankfort boys got wins in each of their Twin Valley League debuts on Tuesday night. The Valley Heights Girls held on to stay perfect in the regular season for a 44-41 win in a fun one, and a strong second half gave the Frankfort boys a 43-27 win.

In the girls game, the scoring came early and often in the first quarter. The Mustangs got off to a solid start with Maggie Toerber scoring seven points and Audra Steinfort adding six more. They also played great defense for the opening few minutes to give them the lead.

However, the Mustangs wore down a bit and Frankfort came back with Hattie Gros scoring five points in the opening eight minutes to tie the game 13-13.

In the second quarter, the offense slowed down and the defenses were the highlight. Valley Heights outscored Frankfort 6-4 in the quarter to take a 19-17 lead into the break.

Valley Heights came out with strong defense right away, but just like the first quarter, they let up towards the end of the quarter. Both offenses made a healthy number of shots with the Wildcats making three three-pointers and the Mustangs making seven total field goals, including Delana Murk scoring seven points. The Wildcats hung on to a 35-34 lead going into the final frame.

Both offenses cooled off once again in the fourth quarter, but Valley Heights did just enough to secure the win by outscoring Frankfort 10-6.

Toerber led Valley Heights in scoring with 15 points, making her the Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Murk finished the game with ten points and Mia Vermetten also added seven.

For Frankfort, Ashlyn Dalinghaus had ten points with five in the third quarter, and Gros also had ten points. Emma Hardwick was a key contributor for the Wildcats as well with eight points.

Valley Heights remains undefeated in the regular season moving to 4-0 overall and a league record of 1-0. As for Frankfort, they lost their first game of the season falling to 4-1 and 0-1 in TVL play.

In the boys game, scoring was a struggle in the first half. Royce Ekstrum had all six of Valley Heights’ points in the first quarter. Porter Colvin had five points and Lane Loiseau had four for Frankfort to give the Wildcats a 10-6 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw just three field goal makes with Frankfort’s lone make coming from Ole Martin Svae off the bench, and Valley Heights had Drake Slifer and Mack Shanks each make one. Going into the halftime break, Frankfort had a 14-11 lead.

The third quarter saw both offenses get loose with Wes Anderson scoring ten points in the quarter after a scoreless first half. Ekstrum made three field goals with six points in the frame as well. Frankfort scored 17 third quarter points compared to Valley Heights’ 12 points to give the Wildcats a 31-23 lead into the fourth quarter.

Valley Heights spent the entire quarter playing catch up and were unable to get back in it with Frankfort knocking down their free throws and keeping the Mustangs out of reach.

Colvin’s 13 points earns him the honor of Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Anderson finished the game with 11 points, and Carter Olson had eight points as he shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Valley Heights was led by Ekstrum’s 12 points and Shanks finished his day with seven points.

With the win, Frankfort has already matched its league win total from last year as they are 1-0 in league play and 3-2 on the season with Blue Valley Randolph coming up next on Monday. As for Valley Heights, they fall to 0-1 in league play and 1-3 overall with Doniphan West coming to town on Friday.
