Jefferson West and Sabetha Split Big 7 Doubleheader

It was the Jefferson West girls basketball team along with the Sabetha boys picking up wins on Friday night at Sabetha in Big 7 league play. 

Girls: Jefferson West 40, Sabetha 37 (OT) 

This game was close from the opening tip as neither team had a lead bigger than five points throughout the entire game. 

The Bluejays led 11-7 after the first quarter but the Tigers outscored Sabetha 12-6 in the second quarter to lead the game 19-17 at halftime. 

The game continued to go back and forth with both teams leaving the door open for the other team to make a play to win the game. 

Sabetha got four looks from three point range in the final seconds ultimately hitting one to tie the game from Camryn Duryea to send the game to overtime. 

Halle Tuck hit a three-pointer for Jeff West to begin the overtime period and they were able to knock down some free throws towards the end to secure the win. 

Jefferson West was led in scoring by Kinley Stones with 14 points while Tuck and Ella Dickey each finished with seven points. Sabetha was led in scoring by Alexia Hayden who finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Audrey Herrmann and Mya Grimes each finished with seven points. 

The Tigers improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in Big 7 league play while the Bluejays dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in Big 7 league play. 

Boys: Jefferson West 38, Sabetha 68

Jefferson West opened up this game leading the Bluejays 10-4 in the first quarter but Sabetha would control the game the rest of the way for the big win. 

The Bluejays went on a 30-8 run to close the first half and they led the Tigers 34-18 at the break and they would continue to extend the lead for the rest of the game. 

10 players scored in the game for Sabetha led by Christian McAfee and Marcus Bauman who each finished with 16 points. McAfee also chipped in with nine rebounds. Will Ulrich was also in double figures with 11 points. 

Conner Reich led the Tigers as he finished the game with 14 points and was the lone Jefferson West player in double figures. Gage Galle finished the game with seven points. 

The Bluejays outrebounded the Tigers by 12 and they forced Jefferson West into 26 turnovers. 

The Bluejays improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Big 7 league play while the Tigers dropped to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in league play. 

Both teams will play one final time on Tuesday night before the Christmas break with Sabetha playing at Nemaha Central while Jefferson West will host Holton.
